Lead Certified Nurse Aide-Medication Aide

The Lead Certified Nurse Aide-Medication Aide (CNA-MA) is a caregiver who also serves as a preceptor for assigned new employees. As a practicing CNA-MA caregiver, the Lead is responsible for administering medications and providing assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) in accordance with Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) Regulations and Westminster Canterbury Richmond policies. The Lead CNA-MA is recognized for clinical excellence, consistently demonstrates our core values and is trained to act as a preceptor to share knowledge and clinical expertise, assisting with the training and onboarding of new employees to Assisted Living.
Shift Details:
Full Time, 3 pm - 11 pm (4 days a week and every other weekend)
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
* Administer medications to ensure residents receive medications as prescribed by physician and document accordingly
* Assist residents with ADLs (bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, eating/feeding, bowel control, bladder control) and document the care provided promoting a resident's independence and ensuring appropriate hygiene
* Assist residents with IADLs (meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, money management) supporting a resident's independence and quality of life
* Assist with serving meals in the dining room to provide adequate nutrition and a resident-desirable social experience
* Monitor and document resident's vital signs, intake/output, weights and blood sugars as necessary and report findings to nurse in charge for appropriate follow up care
* Adhere to the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) and report concerns or suggestions for changes/additions to nurse in charge and/or manager
* Observe residents for changes in mood, behavior, affect, cognition and physical changes and report to nurse in charge and/or manager immediately
* Transport residents to various appointments and activities ensuring appropriate medical and personal commitments are met
* Adhere to change of shift procedure, which includes narcotic count, to meet regulatory compliance and communication regarding pertinent resident information to ensure residents receive continuity of care
* Maintain appropriate VDSS educational compliance
* Provide training and onboarding leadership to assigned preceptee(s)
* Use the competency checklist for the new employee's self-assessment of skills to evaluate and prioritize performance areas of greatest need
* The Team Lead and Preceptee will complete the "Competency Checklist" in its entirety
* Introduce new employee to other staff members, direct new employee to other sources of knowledge and information and assist with new team member assimilation to the culture, helping them feel a sense of belonging
* Document accurately, communicate clearly and concisely, maintain resident safety and report any significant changes to appropriate nurse
* Provide feedback to leadership regarding preceptee's performance
* Keeps others adequately informed, exhibits good listening skills, and maintains resident safety
* Include the new employee in staff meetings, care plan meetings, All Hands, etc.
* Use Westminster Canterbury Richmond policies and procedures for guidance and encourage new employee to look up and find information when needed sharing where to find information and seeking out leadership's input
* Provide training and guidance in a way that will reinforce and encourage problem solving and critical thinking initiative
* Will complete an evaluation of the program for review by the Assisted Living Administrator and LPN Supervisor for quality improvement potential
* Administer medications to ensure residents receive medications as prescribed by physician and document accordingly
* Additional duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Able to lift 25 pounds without assistance, 26+ pounds with manual or mechanical assistance
* Ability to walk, reach, bend and stoop frequently and stand for up to 4 hours at a time
* Ability to push medication carts and occupied wheelchair
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
* Must be able to prioritize and organize workloads
* Must be able to respond and report urgent situations to nurse in charge and/or manager
* Provide the highest level of professionalism, responsiveness, and communication
* Demonstrated high level of nursing skill and leadership ability
* Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
* Must possess the ability to multi-task and frequently change direction.
* Must have excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills
* Ability to maintain confidentiality of staff and resident information
* Ability to remain alert, aware and observant of resident needs
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
* Knowledge of validation therapy
* Enhanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office
* Knowledge of a continuing care retirement community (CCRC)
* Knowledge of Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) Assisted Living Regulations
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* High School Diploma or equivalency
* Registered to practice as a Certified Nurse Aide in the State of Virginia in good standing
* Registered to practice as a Medication Aide in the State of Virginia in good standing
* Must have overall "exceeds standard or higher" performance evaluation rating on last performance evaluation
* Practice good attendance habits; no recent disciplinary action; no disciplinary action involving patient care within the last 5 years
* Must be an employee of Assisted Living for at least 6 months and participated in an Annual Virginia Department of Social Services Survey
* Must have current completion of required educational topics via current Learning Management System
DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* One-year experience administering medications in assisted living facility
* Direct experience working with geriatric or cognitively impaired residents
* CARES Dementia Specialist (C.D.S.)
* CPR, AED and First Aid Certification
* Leadership experience
