Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests. Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum. Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers# offices to obtain orders. Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability. Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer. Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.
