A Brief Overview

Performs all duties and roles of CSS I. Order tests according to clinical policy interpretation. Determine concordance of tests requested with specimens received and with patient category, based on clinical policies. Investigate and correct discrepancies. Act as communication liaison for Clinical Laboratory Scientists, transplant services, medical directors, and external callers. Has ability to clearly explain and/or interpret instructions for various tasks and tests across different organizational levels to ensure each item is handled accurately. Takes a leading role in training CSS I. Investigates and corrects discrepancies. May act as designee in the absence of CSS III or management.

What you will do

* Perform all core duties of Clinical Support Specialist I and other tasks as assigned.
* Place orders for lab reagents and supplies and track receipt. Examples: Follow SBC and SHC processes to place regular and specialty lab supply orders. Lab budget is substantial and some orders are over $400,000. Orders must be timely and correct to keep the lab running. Use discernment to reduce duplications and excessive purchases.
* Act as backup for all Clinical Support Specialist I tasks and provides administrative support to management and other team members. Takes a leading role in training CSS I Examples: All Clinical Support Specialists must be able to cover for the absence of another member of the work group, within the scope of training/validation.
* Maintain LIS patient records including daily service reports, activation status, patient events, etc. Examples: Requires mastery of complex, HLA-specific Lab Information System (LIS) as well as very strong attention to detail to ensure accurate transcription of information. This team member may also discover errors in hospital Epic database which must be communicated to clinic team members for correction. Some data are entered into national OPO website, directly affecting patients waiting for transplant.
* Establish concordance of tests requested, specimens provided, and patient type and status; contact clinical team members when needed to clarify test requests or physician orders; obtain corrected orders when needed. Identify urgent testing needs and escalate appropriately. Examples: Thirteen different clinical policies from internal hospital services and from external entities govern which tests are ordered. Must be able to identify the correct policy to follow and must interpret it to ensure that test orders are correct. Clinic team members placing test orders (physicians, residents, nurses, coordinators) may have limited knowledge of HLA testing, leading to incorrect test requisitions; these errors must be recognized and corrected. Tact and perseverance are needed to obtain corrections from clinic team members. Specimens received must be appropriate for tests ordered. Errors must be corrected before testing can begin.
* Review and assist with documentation of administrative processes and review, draft or edit department SOPs as needed.
* Assists with the preparation of patient records needed for clinical meetings and provide to Directors, CLSs, or others as requested, within HIPAA guidelines for patient data. Notify lab staff of pending test reports needed for upcoming clinical meetings, as needed Examples: Use LIS to generate and provide complete and organized patient testing summary information to Medical Directors, clinical coordinator, and/or CLSs for meetings with clinical team members and others. This task requires an understanding of the LIS, of clinical policies with each transplant service, and of testing procedures.
* Comply with governmental regulations and Stanford Health Care and Blood Center policies regarding health and safety. Observe and support good health and safety practices.
* Strictly observe privacy and security related policies, procedures and practices to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information pertaining to donors, patients, research subjects, and employees. Act as a responsible information steward and treats information as sensitive and confidential in accordance with federal and state laws and with professional ethics, accreditation standards and legal requirements. Do not disclose protected health information inappropriately.
* May be required to enter areas where other individuals work with human blood; potential may exist for unanticipated exposure to bloodborne pathogens by splash or spill.

* High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of college Required
* Associate's Degree Preferred
* Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

* Minimum 2 years' experience in a clinical laboratory setting, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

* Has ability to clearly explain and/or interpret instructions for various tasks and tests across different organizational levels to ensure each item is handled accurately.
* Easy familiarity with medical terminology and ability to understand variety of medical procedures.
* Very strong attention to detail with ability to notice small variations.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including phone and messaging, with persons of widely diverse backgrounds.
* Ability to understand and apply complex rules governing specimen handling and test ordering. Ability to make decisions based on clinical policy guidelines.
* Ability to effectively use highly complex databases and software tools.
* Demonstrated high-level organizational skills; ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks with competing priorities.
* Demonstrated perseverance and tact in dealing with customers and clinical partners.
* Strong keyboarding skills with a high degree of accuracy; familiarity with and ability to use computer, photocopier, fax and other office equipment.
* Ability to maintain respect and composure in high-pressure situations.
* Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures and protocols of the Blood Center.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $35.64 - $46.32 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
