BASIC FUNCTION:
The purpose of this position is to facilitate research, gain community trust, educate and engage the community, recruit and enroll participants in clinical translational research, develop recruitment materials, perform other study-related tests and tasks, and liaise with community advocates and opinion leaders, participate in meetings locally and regionally, and become an advocate for community participatory research.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Be a member of a research team, responsible for being a team player and, on occasion, providing direction to others on community engagement and community participatory research.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Establish internal and external contact with the institute's staff, researchers, participants, and junior in and outside vendors to gather and exchange information.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Plan and conduct community engagement, recruitment, participant enrollment, and retention activities. Assist in planning recruitment materials, bringing subjects to the clinical research center, coordinating and participating in testing them and gathering data, and liaising with sponsors to successfully complete a major project.
The Research Associate will coordinate research activities in the Division of Geriatrics, recruit human subjects, perform study-related tests/procedures, enter data, complete case research forms; assist with initiating IRB and request to seek off-campus funding applications when requested.
Importantly, this person will liaise with external agents and attend research meetings onsite, locally, and out of town. The successful candidate will spend a significant amount of time engaging the community (educating, recruiting, forming partnerships/alliances), including but not limited to churches, health fairs, senior housing and community living, wellness centers, developing recruitment materials, and planning conferences.
The successful staff will serve as the point of contact for enrolled subjects, following up and managing subjects' retention and other responsibilities as assigned.
Responsible for establishing trusting relationships with patients and their families while providing general support and encouragement.
- Provide ongoing follow-up, basic motivational interviewing, and goal setting with participants/families.
- Follow-up with participants via phone calls, home visits, and visits to other settings where patients can be found.
- Help participants set personal health-related goals and attend appointments.
- Provide referrals for services to community agencies as appropriate.
- Help patients connect with transportation resources and provide appointment reminders in special circumstances.

- Work closely with medical providers to help ensure that participants have comprehensive and coordinated research visits.
- Work collaboratively with other clinical personnel assigned to the same participants.
- Knowledgeable about community resources appropriate to the needs of patients/families.
- Responsible for consistently communicating with the caregivers to evaluate and ensure that provided information and reports clearly describe research goals and ensure understanding.
- Act as a patient advocate and liaison between the patient/family and community service agencies.
- Record clinical research information in the case report forms and other software no later than 24 hours after patient contact.
- Attend regular staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings, as requested.
- Always maintain HIPPA compliance.
- Conduct workshops that will benefit staff, participants, and research in the targeted populations and make public presentations regarding the research projects.
- Perform administrative work in support of research objectives, develop and monitor the project budget, and authorize expenditures of project funds.
- Obtain research data for the development of research as required.
- Plan and coordinate advanced and comprehensive research projects, which include consulting with other researchers to derive an understanding of the hypothesis and experimental for various designs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate degree (with excellent real-life community engagement experience), or BSc, or Master's Degree, in any discipline and one year experience in relevant advanced and comprehensive research.
