About the Opportunity

The Director of the Pre-Health Professional Development Office serves as the faculty (faculty-equivalent) lead, working with the administrative supervisor, for the development and operation of the University Office of Pre-Health Professional Development. The Director is the point person for the Pre-Health Professional Development Office at West Virginia University. The Director leads, directs, and implements pre-health career advising and services for current students and alumni pursuing post-graduate opportunities in the health professions, with a specific focus on gaining entrance to medical school, dental school, and allied health professional schools. The Director develops and delivers a broad range of services to support undergraduates and alumni preparing for careers in the health professions and pursuing professional school admission in fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health-related disciplines. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, pre-career advising; coordinating and delivering programs, speakers, and events to assist pre-health professions students; maintaining the health professions portal and/or website; data tracking and assessment; and preparing reports and publications.

What you'll do:

* Developing and overseeing the operation of WVU's Office for PreHealth Services
* Chair the PreHealth Advisory Council
* Planning and overseeing campus-wide PreHealth events
* Work with the Honors College Director of Marketing and Communications or other media outlets to develop suitable newsletters, media, publicity events, publications, and web content to publicize and promote Pre-Health efforts and achievements.
* Manage all related budgets to include but not limited to advertising/communications and correspondence in compliance with University and State guidelines, travel arrangements, procurement card documentation
* Provides reports on activities, progress, plans and challenges of the Pre-Health program
* Conduct daytime, evening, and occasional weekend workshops, events, and outreach activities centered on preparing personal statements, standardized tests (the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, GRE, etc.), the medical and professional school application process, interviewing strategies, obtaining internship and shadow experiences, and setting realistic expectations.
* Clinical internship placement: Supporting students in identifying and securing clinical shadowing and research experiences designed to augment their exposure to the health professions.
* Present at relevant professional conferences and/or prepare scholarly writing in field
* Where appropriate, search for and apply for external funding to support the Pre-Health mission
* Where appropriate, collaborate with other constituents within the University on writing for refereed journals

Education: Master's degree in the sciences or related field, terminal doctorate preferred.

Experience: Three or more years:

* Supervisory role - supervising program staff, graduate and undergraduate student assistants.


* Advising - undergraduate advising in the sciences or related field

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

* Excellent writing skills.
* The ability to interact and communicate professionally with medical school deans, university and medical school administrations, faculty, students and parents.
* Effective communicator and presenter; ability to effectively teach and present information to students, parents, and health educators.
* Demonstrated understanding of the requirements for admission to the full range of health professions.
* Strong ability to represent WVU and its students to health care practitioners and the health professions schools.
* Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze large data sets on university and national trends in pre-health programming, and ability to use data systems such as AMCAS, AADSAS, and AACOMAS.
* Ability to communicate clearly and make a positive impression with prospective students.
* Capacity to employ an appropriate balance of high expectations and compassionate support when interacting with students.
* Accomplished organizational skills to provided substantial support to a large number of undergraduate students.
* Self-motivated and dedicated to the completion of his/her responsibilities and willing to work on projects with deadlines and in programs that may be delivered off-hours.
* Excellent time management skills required in managing an extensive workload, multiple projects, requests, deadlines, etc.
* Positive and results-orientated attitude.
* Ability to act independently to accomplish tasks and implement solutions to problems without direct supervision.
* Demonstrated ability to set priorities and carry out assignments within established deadlines.
