The Department of Psychology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Academic Advisor.

About the Opportunity

As a (Hybrid) Academic Advisor, you will provide academic and career advising to students in the Psychology major, including serving as the advisor for about a quarter of students in the major, organizing short-term plans for students to meet major benchmarks leading to graduation and meaningful careers, and creating matriculation plans toward graduation while maintaining financial aid.

What you'll do:

* Provide academic and career orientation advising to students in the Psychology major.
* Serve as primary adviser for freshmen and early Psychology majors.
* Organize short-term plans of study for students to meet major's benchmarks that will lead to graduation and a career of interest to them.


* Meet and advise incoming new and transfer students during New Student Orientation (NSO) during the summer.
* Meet with students switching into Psychology from other majors or other institutions during the fall and spring terms.
* Assist with student inquiries about the Psychology Minor.
* Meet regularly with assigned advisees to help students navigate curriculum and navigate through the college experience.
* Serve as the point person for the Student Success Collaborative Program for the college (running campaigns, analyzing data, being a resource for department).
* Assist majors preparing for post baccalaureate transitions, including arranging educational opportunities for career planning.
* Actively participate on the Advising Committee of the Department of Psychology.
* Teach appropriate undergraduate courses as assigned by Chair.
* Actively participate in advisers' training and development in the College.
* Acquire an active knowledge of all the procedures that are part of the Eberly College Undergraduate Studies Office protocol (i.e. change of major, adding a major or a degree, graduation certification, 90-CR checks, transient forms, etc.)
* Participate in WVU Recruitment efforts aimed at potential Psychology majors, including programs aimed at transfer students as well as students from diverse backgrounds.
* Assist with administering ACAT tests and capstone poster sessions each semester
* Assist the Lead Advisor and the Director of Undergraduate Training in surveying undergraduate students and alumni for gathering program outcome data.
* Other tasks as assigned by the department chair.
* Bachelor's degree in psychology or related field.
* A minimum of one (1) year of teaching or advising at the college level, including graduate assistantships.
* Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
* Evidence of effective teaching or advising.


* Evidence of timely completion of work.
* Ability to interface employer expectations and strategic curricular decisions.
* Knowledge, or ability to acquire knowledge, of ECAS and department admission standards and degree-progress benchmarks.
* Demonstrated ability to assist students dealing with academic difficulties.
* Ability to develop strategies and programs to support student persistence, retention, and career readiness.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's degree in psychology or related field.
