Qualifications:
  1. Licensure through the Arkansas Department of Education, School Psychology Specialists (K-12)
  2. Ability to lift and/or carry at least thirty (30) pounds independently and over thirty (30) pounds with assistance

Director of special education and federal programs

Supervises:
Not applicable

Terms of Employment:
The contract length will be 195 days. Extended Contracts may be offered as needed and reviewed on an annual basis.

Evaluation:
Based on local district policy and Arkansas Department of Education guidelines, and performed by the director of special education and federal programs, who may be assisted by the Special Education supervisor.

Job Goal:
The School Psychology Specialist will endeavor to use their advanced training in human development, behavior, and mental health to help students excel in the school environment. This professional works to improve their students' lives across a number of areas, including helping with academic performance, boosting social functioning, working to resolve behavioral problems, and supporting emotional health.

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  2. Conducts formal psychological evaluations of various target student populations for special education eligibility, planning, placement, and consultation with or referral to available resources.
  3. Receives and reviews available developmental information from school-based and outside resources about student behavior(s) and selects an appropriate psychological intervention.
  4. Consults with curriculum personnel, administrators, and teachers in order to help adapt curriculum and classroom practices to pupils with any special needs.
  5. Administers, scores, and interprets psychological tests of intelligence, personality, neuropsychological processing, achievement, and development.
  6. Observes students in the classroom for diagnostic purposes; interviews students, parents, and school personnel, and gathers other sources of information on individual students.
  7. Interprets and synthesizes information obtained from psychological interventions in order to prepare a written report.
  8. Uses information obtained from the psychological evaluation to develop written recommendations to improve student engagement and learning.
  9. Consults with students, staff, and parents to assist in developing individual instructional strategies or mental and behavioral health services for students.
  10. Collaborates with other school personnel to create and maintain a multi-tiered continuum of services to support academic, social, emotional, and behavioral goals for students.
  11. Establishes and maintains effective open communication with students, parents, teachers, and administrators; participates in staff professional development activities.
  12. Participates in campus problem-solving team.
  13. Assists in finding resources as well as actively providing a continuum of mental and behavioral health services, including individual and group counseling, behavioral coaching, positive behavioral supports, and parent education.
  14. Addresses individual differences, strengths, backgrounds, and needs in the design, implementation, and evaluation of all services.
  15. Remains knowledgeable about ethical and professional standards and legal regulations.
  16. Uses techniques of data collection to evaluate services at the individual, group, and systems levels.
  17. Participates in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments and for maintenance of license.
  18. Special Knowledge/Skills:
    1. Knowledge of child development, human behavior, learning theory, family systems theory, crisis intervention theory/skills, and consultation.
    2. Skill in effectively observing and managing a classroom and student behavior.
    3. Skill in communicating effectively with others.
    4. Skill in administering psychological assessments, evaluation and feedback, group process, and therapy principles.
    5. Skill in modifying instruction for various student needs.
    6. Skill in working with various forms of equipment, including but not limited to personal computers, calculators, projectors, and printers.
    7. Skill in working with computer tools, including but not limited to email, internet, word processing, and spreadsheets.
    8. Skill in working in collaborative team-based environments.
    9. Knowledge and sensitivity to the impact of diversity issues as related to student achievement and mental and behavioral health.
    10. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
    11. Accepts possibility of biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
