Bioinformatician II BWH Sleep Medicine

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
The Division of Sleep Medicine Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Research in the Department of Medicine is seeking a level II Bioinformatician to work closely with an inter-disciplinary group of scientists and clinicians to play a leadership role in ongoing medical research projects focused on sleep and cardiovascular disorders, including data wrangling, computational programming and bioinformatics analysis to support several projects. Studies require integration and analyses of a wide variety of behavioral, physiological, biological, genomic, medical record and environmental data. The projects may require advanced knowledge of various statistical methods and machine learning algorithms. There are also opportunities to work with investigators across multiple sites to monitor and report on data and study goals. The Bioinformatician will work with other team members, including physicians, senior biostatisticians, epidemiologists, project coordinators and research assistants. The Bioinformatician may assist with manuscript preparation and provide training for junior analysts and trainees. The Bioinformatician may also assist with the adaptation and testing of code for processing and analysis of sleep-related data, such as actigraphy and EEG signals and may work with other Division faculty and staff to develop computer labs, workshops and written materials to assist the Division trainees in learning about clinical and epidemiological research.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
1. Performs programming in R (and preferably Python) to support data curation, harmonization, quality control, and maintenance activities and analyses across multiple studies, ensuring the integrity of collected data over time. Conducts computational programming and bioinformatics analysis to support the scientific aims of various research projects.
2. Design and apply machine learning algorithms and statistics models on complex physiological, including quantitative physiological signals collected at multiple time scales.
3. Executes bioinformatics queries using publicly available databases and software to interpret findings from large data resources.
4. Adapts and tests computational code for processing of sleep and other data, ensuring consistency and accuracy of results.
* Keep up with new software, bioinformatics procedures and instrumentation by attending professional conferences and studying scientific literature.
6. Maintains detailed written documentation of bioinformatics analysis pipelines, creates databases and data dictionaries for reproducibility.
7. Assists in writing and preparing research reports, including internal documentation, academic publications, and presentations at national meetings.
8. Contributes to interim and final project reports and provides data-related input for new proposals and manuscripts.
9. Work with other Division faculty and staff to develop computer labs, workshops and written materials to assist the Division trainees in learning about clinical and epidemiological research.
10. Provide training to junior staff and trainees in coding and algorithms as necessary.
11. Performs all other duties as assigned.

* Ability to productively interact with investigators, biostatisticians, informaticians, and research staff to accomplish project goals.
* Highly organized, with decision-making skills, initiative, and ability to work as part of a growing data management team.
* Excellent troubleshooting skills.
* Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, flexibility, and ability to interact with a diverse and large research team including physician investigators, statisticians, bioinformaticians, and research assistants.
* Solid skills in data analysis and computer science.
* Knowledge of clinical research, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
* Bachelor's degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics or similar field. Master's degree preferred.
* Three or more years of experience in quantitative science.
* Familiar with high performance computing environment.
* Understanding of the scientific method and the research lifecycle.
