Behavior Support Technician

BEHAVIOR SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to provide specialized, individual behavioral support to students; to respond to behavioral crises on an on-call basis through immediate intervention and follow-up instructional and/or behavioral modification activities; to provide ongoing behavioral assistance to assigned students and their teachers; to assist in ongoing training and behavior modification activities with children experiencing special behavioral needs; to train staff to assist in meeting behavioral needs of students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
* To provide emergency behavioral interventions to individual students experiencing significant behavioral challenges
* To observe, monitor and assist students with special behavioral challenges
* To develop management plans for students with significant behavioral challenges
* To provide a variety of behavioral interventions to alter significant behavioral challenges of individual students
* Direct students into safe learning and play activities and functions and assist in shaping of appropriate social behaviors
* Assist in the behavior management of acting-out student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques
* Assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aides to reinforce target behaviors of students with special behavioral needs
* Assist teachers in establishing successful behavior management strategies
* Train staff in behavioral management techniques
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Of:
* Basic concepts of child growth and developmental behavioral characteristics
* Experience and training in positive behavior support techniques
* Experience and training in basic behavior modification strategies
* Must have current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques
* Effective oral presentation skills
Ability to:
* Adeptly handle student behavior particularly in an acting-out, crisis situation
* Appropriately manage student behavior on an on-going basis, guiding students to socially acceptable classroom behaviors
* Demonstrate an empathetic, patient and receptive attitude with students of varied age groups, particularly those exhibiting significantly challenging behaviors
* Communicate effectively in written and oral form
* Understand and carry out oral and written directions
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
* Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to hold, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
* This type of work involves very little sitting time and may involve running, walking and standing.
* Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects and ability to run after eloping children are important aspects of this job.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
A high school diploma or equivalent, and two years of college or equivalent, and any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience:
A typical qualifying entrance background is experience working with children in a learning environment, especially with students experiencing special needs.
Education:
* High school diploma or equivalent;
* Knowledge of special needs students.
* Must meet NCLB Qualifications (Minimum of 48 College Semester Units or pass District NCLB Test for Instructional Aides).
