Position Summary:

SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for two (2) full time Academic Success Advisor positions.

An Academic Success Advisor will work as part of a team to support the overall mission and functions of Advisement and Transition. Responsibilities include supporting student success initiatives through academic advising and success coaching and implementing retention strategies to improve student retention and persistence. Each Academic Success Advisor will have an additional programmatic focus and could include the following: major selection and pre-major support; support outreach programming; non-traditional and graduate student support; and communication and outreach.

Major Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities

+ Utilize a case management approach in outreaching to and supporting students (individually and in groups) who are identified as academically vulnerable and/or not reaching academic milestones as defined by university policies and academic program requirements. This population could include, but is not limited to, first generation students, students on academic probation, or students who need additional support.

+ Use early alert (Starfish) software and College Student Inventory ( CSI ) responses to monitor, track and provide academic support, outreach and referral to students based on alerts raised.

+ Proactively advise a case load of pre-major (undecided) students.

+ Assist with open advising coverage and serve as a resource to all students in understanding college policies, academic requirements, academic appeals and other processes that might impact retention and degree completion.

+ Assist in reviewing incoming credit and registering new students.

+ Support other office functions such as faculty advisor support, transfer credit, orientation and first-year experience.

Each Academic Success Advisor will have an additional programmatic focus and could include the following:

Major selection and pre-major support

+ Coordinate campus wide messaging, outreach, and support on decision making and major choice

+ Co-teach ADV 200, Career and Major Exploration, one section each fall and spring

+ Manage enrollments in learning communities and register students

Support Outreach Programming

+ Coordinate outreach to students at key points in the semester around repeat credits, academic alerts and students not yet registered

+ Develop and implement student success initiatives to connect students to academic resources, academic planning tools, campus resources, how to navigate campus policies and provide timely support

+ Manage, maintain and update advising support resources, including videos, for students, staff and faculty

Non-Traditional and Graduate Student Support

+ Serve as advisor to Non-Traditional Student Organization

+ Coordinate programming and support for non-traditional and graduate students

+ Serve as a resource to graduate coordinators

Communication and outreach

+ Manage multiple social media accounts

+ Create campus messaging around advising and registration

+ Assist with electronic and print publications including website and student planner

+ Manage content of electronic messaging board

Required Qualifications:

+ Bachelor's degree

+ Direct experience with academic advising or supporting student success initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or related field

+ Minimum one year professional full-time experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising, student success or other student support area

+ Evidence of communication, public speaking and organizational skills

+ Demonstrated use of technology and software packages such as Banner, Degree Works, Microsoft office (specifically Excel and Access), and/or Starfish (early alert system)

+ Willingness and ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
