JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Reports to Laboratory Director. Non-Exempt position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
* Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
* Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
* Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
* Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
* Responsible for keeping track of pending log throughout shift and before leaving for the day.
* Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.
* Maintains and uses various equipment in clinical laboratory
* Responsible for improving turnaround time for performance improvement.
* Loads specific reagents to analyzers and preparing them for examination per policy and procedure.
* Identifies chemical composition and concentrations and to observe the process of change (delta check).
* Process and review order log/resulting/scanning/faxing tests sent to Labcorp.
* Responsible for performing and documenting on maintenance log.
* Studies morphology of red cells, which may be related to a disease process.
* Records date/time/initials of reagent open date.
* Uses and maintains all clinical laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: blood cell analyzer, staining unit, diluters, and coagulation instruments.
* Performs procedures to count and identify blood cells and specialized hematologic procedures.
* Responsible for blood typing and screening of patient cells.
* Verifies blood group of donor or patient following appropriate policy and procedure.
* Responsible for inspecting stored blood for signs of contamination, discards expired/contaminated blood products.
* Maintains inventory of blood bank (units, reagents, etc.)
* Identifies unexpected antibodies, if applicable.
* Responsible for inoculating, cultivating, classifying, and identifying microorganisms found in body fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, and surgical specimens.
* Prepares and interprets gram stains, fungus, and parasitology.
* Responsible for observing material derived from cultures and identifying types of bacterial colonies found, if applicable.
* Responsible for documenting and relaying all DSHS reportables.
* Assist phlebotomy staff with venipunctures on an as needed basis: Identifies the patient using two patient identifiers by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient's identification band before venipuncture is performed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology-generalist required.

At least one certification required (ASCP, NCA, AMT)

Current BLS for healthcare provider certification required.

Knowledge of Meditech lab, blood bank, and microbiology modules preferred.

Required Skills

Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Advanced computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

Job requires medium lifting on an occasional basis.
