Job Summary:

The Neurodiagnostic Technician Registered is a formally-trained technician who operates electroencephalography equipment to measure and record electrical activity of brain, producing study reports that assist in diagnosis of epileptic/seizure disorders. The Neurodiagnostic Technician

sets up equipment, prepares patient for the study and conducts neurodiagnostic procedures as ordered by physicians. Incumbent ensures necessary information is gathered and documented regarding patient's medical history, explains testing procedure to allay patient's fears/concerns. The Neurodiagnostic Technician is responsible for reporting critical findings to the physician. All activities are carried out with primary emphasis on safety of patient and producing a quality and comprehensive study report. Incumbent functions as resource to other technicians in the proper setup and operation of equipment, identification of artifacts and resolution of same, and other techniques that support highest quality of patient care and recordings. The Neurodiagnostic Technician prepares and maintains appropriate documentation.

Education:

Required:

Completion of an accredited program in neurodiagnostics or employer-sponsored training program recognized by ABRET (American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists) as meeting requirements for registration OR equivalent EEG experience of 5 years

6 months experience demonstrating competency in full range of job duties assigned to Neurodiagnostics Technician.

Required:

* Current registration as a Neurodiagnostics Technician, preferably gained through ABRET.
* BLS completed prior to going to the unit/ department and maintained going forward
* Completion of pediatric specific training for EEG within the first year of hire

PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Comfort and skill required to engage with children of many ages across different developmental stages, in addition to communicating effectively with their concerned parents.

Effective communications and explanations of what is being done to perform the study are critical.

Developing comfort with children with various genetic syndromes, autism, and other developmental disorders, in addition to general complexities of working with young children who may have difficulty cooperating or complying with instructions.

Learning how to place electrodes on a wide range of patient sizes, from premature infants, who may weigh 2 pounds or less, with very small heads, all the way up to adult sized individuals.

Neonatal EEG studies are especially complex to set up and run.

Understanding that typical glues used to attach EEG electrodes to adult heads often cannot be used on small infants and young children.

Different pastes and other materials may be required to apply electrodes to avoid significant injury to scalp and skin. Learning to recognize EEG patterns specific to children of various developmental stages that require notification of the neurologist in real time or notation as to timing during the exam.

Department Position Summary:

Responsibilities and Duties - based on designated/classified level of the technician

* Monitoring/watching ongoing long term EEG including in the epilepsy monitoring unit and in the ICU or other general medical setting for clinical and subclinical seizures and than notifying a higher level technologist and/or physician per standard operating protocol of seizures. Recognizing and identifying the key differences between an epileptic and non-epileptic event
* Disconnecting EEG studies
* First Aid for seizures (basic response and positioning

Includes the above mentioned responsibilities of technician level 3 and the below:

* Performing routine in patient and out patient EEGs
* Beginning (hooking up) long term video EEG studies
* Correcting placement of electrodes when necessary

Monitoring above includes but is not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies, for clinical, sub clinical seizures, recognizing normal variants, recognizing and understanding the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and identifying different types if artifact and taking the necessary action to correct this.

* Observing and trouble shooting the EEG (record) for quality, and making corrections as needed to maintain quality including but not limited to impedance checks, detecting salt bridges
* First Aid for seizures (basic response and positioning)

Includes the above mentioned responsibilities of technician levels 2 and 3 and the below:

* supervising technicians levels 2 and 3 , and assisting with the completion of their studies
* Performing skin checks
* clipping and pruning the record
* completing the ictal response protocol
* performing injections in ictal spect cases
* contacting IT and other equipment personnel for technical support issues when required.
* performs other duties as assigned by the EEG lead tech or Clinical Administrator
* Collecting and distributing event log sheets
* Rounding with the Epileptologist

General Duties of required of all EEG technologists:

* Calling patients to confirm appointments, and scheduling of studies.
* Seizure response and first aid for seizure patients.
* Will be required to work various shifts and take call for weekend coverage.
* The EEG Technologist is responsible for performing Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by a physician. The EEG Technologist must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other department staff members. The EEG Technologist must maintain departmental and patient-specific documentation in an organized manner.
* The EEG Technologist must be able to work independently and interdependently as necessary. .The EEG Technologist will be required to have a basic knowledge of computers.
