The role will be responsible for the following:

The Program Director is responsible for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Chattanooga State Community College. The Director will lead, supervise, manage, and implement all aspects of the program, including classroom and online course development and instruction, curriculum development, marketing, recruitment and advising of students, budgeting, and faculty supervision and support, and revision/modification of all program components as needed. Position includes teaching responsibilities, including clinical practicum and capstone courses.

The Program Director holds a 12-month faculty position and reports to the Dean of Nursing & Allied Health. This position is responsible for delivering quality instruction using integrative technologies. Faculty are expected to provide academic advising to students and participate in college, department, and community activities related to the College's mission.

Essential Functions:

Fiscal Stewardship

* Submit and revise a cost-effective annual budget for clinical travel assignments and other student-directed functions.


* Direct, supervise, manage, and implement the overall operation of the Diagnostic Medical and Vascular Sonography Program.


* Monitor and analyze data pertinent to students' successful academic performance and ensure completion of ChSCC's Academic Program Review for Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.


* Develop, monitor, and maintain Program Budget



Teaching Excellence and Program Innovation

* Participate in the development, revision, and implementation of curriculum and course offerings.


* Oversee the selection and training of clinical instructors/preceptors involved in the general and cardiovascular sonography segments of the program.


* Evaluate and ensure the effectiveness of clinical experiences for the concentration(s) in which students are enrolled, to include, but not limited to, assuring clinical instructors have the appropriate credentials and there is an appropriate ratio of sonographers to students at each clinical site.


* Evaluate student performance within the classroom, laboratory and clinical environments.


* Promote, support and participate in student retention, and other program and student outcome efforts.


* Attend required meetings scheduled at the College, Division, Program, and Curriculum Committee levels to increase overall College and program instructional and outcome efforts.


* Periodically assess and advise on instructional aids and resources, as part of the program's master plan.


* Attend Program Director meetings and other requested events in the absence or at the request of the Sonography Program Director.



Instruction Specific Activities

* Instruct students in the didactic, laboratory, and clinical environments within assigned courses.


* Manage online course delivery by ensuring all model courses are current.


* Facilitate adjunct laboratory or clinical faculty (or new adjunct faculty with associated responsibilities to your own) with organization of classroom and clinical duties.


* Network with industry personnel to assist in promotion of the college and its programs and the securing of guest speakers and adjunct faculty.


* Update and periodically review clinic manuals (usually every other week when students are in class session, and whenever visiting students within the clinical setting) for competency progression and accurate records.


* Maintain personal schedule of classroom and office hours, and travel schedule to clinic, for self and other faculty involved in clinical instruction within the sonography program.


* Provide out-of-class academic assistance to students as necessary, including the formulation of a remediation plan if needed.



Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

* Maintain constructive communication with the faculty, advisory members and dean to provide necessary information for program continuity and effectiveness.


* Work collaboratively with Program Directors in the development to promote and support the College, Division and Program efforts.


* Prepare semester clinical placement reports and assist in annual program reports, under the direction of the program director.


* Participate in the recruitment, application process and selection of sonography students, to include responsibility of personal advising and program information sessions, and returning emails and phone calls that request further program information.


* Assure representation of the College with external community partners (e.g., business, industry, and other higher educational institutions).


* Complete periodic review and evaluation procedures, according to the program's master plan, to evaluate program effectiveness, also making any recommendations for revision considerations to program director and/or advisory committee.


* Initiate contact and communication with advisory groups and/or community agencies, under the direction of the program director.


* Support a culture of innovation and input that encourages professional development and stakeholder input and provides opportunities for growth.


* Participate in personal professional development opportunities, staying up-to-date on best practices in both sonography and skills-based education.


* Create a culture that promotes knowledge expansion within an expanding imaging technology.


* Assess the effectiveness of the program, and your role and responsibilities within it, in conjunction with the director, and make improvements as needed.


* Actively participate in the program's advisory, recruitment and selection processes in order to develop and/or implement plans for program continuation and/or expansion, based upon a market analysis and community needs.


* Serve on at least one College committee (or, alternately, within the Division) each year, unless release time or lack of need at the College level can be documented.


* Assist in the recruitment and selection of College personnel, as assigned.



Holistic Student Support

* Serve as a respected professional role model for sonography students and graduates.


* Collaborate with faculty, deans, and other administrators to meet the holistic needs of our students towards ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion.


* Advise applicants on academic and career goals to help them develop plans for program entry or graduation and job placement.


* Assist in the recruitment, selection, orientation and evaluation of program applicants and new students.


* Counsel and advise program students regarding career goals, registration, clinical requirements, schedules, retention and remediation concerns, and job placement.


* Prepare students for clinical entry with completion of all onboarding requirements, and thereafter monitor to assure maintenance of all credentials and requirements throughout the program year.


* Participate in college-wide committees and initiatives related to student success and retention.


* Complete and update program documentation for program operations and accreditation purposes, as necessary and/or as requested by the program director, according to the program's master plan and the College and program strategic plans.


* Assure student access to appropriate equipment (with current technologic functions), supplies and necessary learning resources through scheduled laboratory or off-site usage or assistance in procuring donations.


* Assist in formal and informal employment placement activities (or academic transfer following program completion).


* Support student activities related to student professional growth and career preparation.



Position Requirements:

* Preferred to have a minimum of a Master's degree in a related field, from a regionally accredited institution


* Must minimally possess the appropriate credential(s) specific to the concentration(s) designated to coordinate (e.g., Adult Echocardiography and Vascular Technology), in addition to at least one other required credential in general sonography (Abdomen or Obstetrics & Gynecology), with the ability and willingness to achieve the other credential prior to the beginning of General Sonography Program year.


* Must have documented experience in supervision, instruction, evaluation, student guidance, and in educational theories and techniques.


* Minimum of two years demonstrated full-time clinical experience as a registered sonographer.


* Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.


* Must document and maintain active CPR certification acceptable background check, all necessary educational transcripts.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Must have the ability to collect information, perform analysis, and recommend solutions.


* Must possess a general knowledge of operation and organizational structures of a community college environment; instructional standards, curriculum and accreditation requirements; computer software skills; file management and reporting systems.


* Must demonstrate instructional and scanning competence.



The Program Director for the Sonography Program works a twelve-month contract each year and may be required to work additional daily hours from the traditional schedule, due to travel or extended lab days, as needed. This position reports directly to Dean NAH.
