Career Opportunity

The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Sr Youth Development Specialist.This position assists in the daily administration and operation of assigned programs and services in the Department of Youth Development and Social Initiatives, including Safekey before and after school programs and other specialized programs designed to support K-12 education. Trains and leads full-time, part-time, hourly and volunteer staff. Addresses more complex or escalated customer service issues.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the advanced level class within the Youth Development Specialist series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the lower Youth Development Specialist by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned and the level of independence expected. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. This classification is also distinguished from Youth Development Coordinator, which performs formal supervisory work over other full-time staff.

Supervision Received and Exercised

May receive functional and technical supervision from Youth Development Coordinator, Community and Youth Development Officer or Youth Development and Social Initiatives Manager.

Acts as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results.

Type of Examination:

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

Selection Process:

Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Essential Functions:

* Coordinates activities in an assigned specialized youth development program area; conducts needs assessment; develops and plans programs based upon community needs; organizes, promotes, implements and evaluates programs.
* Plans, develops and implements age appropriate programs, curriculum and special events for children enrolled in Safekey and other YDSI out-of-school time programs, including but not limited to programs to improve literacy, nutrition, health, self-esteem and social interaction. Evaluates activities and programs for content, techniques and special problems; recommends and implements improvements.
* Supervises seasonal and hourly employees, instructors and volunteers; participates in recruiting and selecting job applicants; conducts staff orientation, develops and provides training, oversees work and monitors performance; approves and processes timecards; may make recommendations for terminations.
* Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards, safety and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
* Plans and coordinates hourly staff schedules for assigned Safekey sites and other out-of-school time programming sites; ensures compliance with daily staff to participant ratios.
* Monitors satellite site activities and responds to unusual events and activities as needed. Receives and responds to complex and sensitive issues. Handles inquiries and complaints from start through resolution in an efficient and timely manner.
* Conducts regular site visits and monitors for function, safety and equipment issues; address issues or recommend improvements as necessary.
* Maintains proficient working knowledge and practical application of the Safekey's web-based software management system. Provides customer service support and assistance for program families in the use of the system's registration interface, as well as support and assistance for employees in the use of the system's attendance tracking and participant profile interface.
* Provides direct assistance to programs, activities and special events; coordinates with other work units on programming as necessary.
* Assists in monitoring and maintaining appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure efficient and effective operations.
* Maintains documentation on all programs, participants and employees; prepares statistical and summary reports as needed.
* Serves as liaison with other city departments, divisions, the public, outside agencies and community partners.
* Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, and other general clerical work.
* Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives.
* Participates in marketing research, promotional materials and displays.

Marginal Functions:

* Attends and participates in professional group meetings. Stays abreast of new trends, programs and innovations.
* Provides front-line program services or runs activities as needed.
* Participates in the review and development of department policies and procedures as necessary; may assist with the facilitation of applicable staff training.
* Identifies training needs, designs and delivers trainings in small group and auditorium-style settings; evaluates training effectiveness.
* Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience/Training:

1. Associate's or higher degree in education, enrichment, child development, youth programming, case management, public administration, or recreation programming. Experience in youth development programs is desirable, plus one (1) year (full-time) experience in education, enrichment, child development, youth programming, case management, public administration or recreation programming. Experience in youth development programs is desirable including internships, work study or volunteer.

OR

2.Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of full-time experience working in education, enrichment, child development, youthprogramming, case management, public administration, or recreation programming. Experience in youth development programs is desirable

Any work experience, paid internships, work study, or volunteer assignments in the area of youth development is desirable.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of Child & Adult First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is required within 90 days of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.

Special Requirements

Fluency in Spanish is desirable.
