The mission of Lyon-Martin Health Services is to provide compassionate and trauma-informed medical, gynecological, and mental health care services to trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex communities and cis-gender women with specific sensitivity to LGBQA+ sexual orientation, disability, size, race, ethnicity, and language, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay.

Job Summary

The Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics provides day-to-day oversight and management of all aspects of gynecological and obstetric care throughout the clinic. The Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics is a member of the leadership team. They act as a clinical leader by providing strategic vision to the organization as well as clinical leadership and support to AANPs, RNs, and students/residents, increasing staff competencies and satisfaction, and improving the overall quality and efficiency of the delivery of clinical services. The Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics informs the Leadership Team on clinical issues and workflows needing to be addressed or improved, including but not limited to Quality Assurance, Compliance, Quality Improvement, Policy & Procedure development and implementation, program improvement, expansion and creation, equipment, audits, billing and coding, and staff training.

In addition, the Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics provides direct patient care for 2 days/month on average, supports clinic flow by supporting and training AANPs and RNs, expanding their OB/GYN competencies, taking walk-ins and flips as needed, completing necessary clinical admin work and participates in meetings. The Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics does not participate in the on-call system or provider of the day but may be consulted by providers who are. The Director of Gynecology & Obstetrics will be responsible for creating systems that strike a balance between the productivity needs of the clinic, quality of care, and staff satisfaction. They will work closely with mental health providers and specialists to provide a holistic, integrated, and collaborative model of care. They are expected to maintain a high degree of professional competence and the highest possible ethical standards, and to function as part of a care-giving team. In all of their work, they uphold and imbue in others a commitment to addressing racism, and gender and sexual discrimination, fatphobia, ableism, and bias within the organization and our clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities
Director Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with the Medical Director, develops and implements policies and procedures pertaining to the OB/GYN care.
  • Provides clinical leadership and support to advanced practice providers, nurses, and interns/students.
  • Supports in hiring, training, on-boarding, and terminating physicians and mid-level providers, as needed.
  • Promotes and enhances integrated team-based and patient-centered medical care.
  • Serves as a trainer and preceptor for Lyon-Martin's clinical rotation, as needed.
  • Participates in program subcommittees to support with program development and implementation in relation to OB/GYN care.
  • Co-leads monthly provider team meetings with Medical Director.
  • Provides clinical expertise to Research Subcommittee
  • Participates in the Quality Control Committee (QCC) and champions continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Participates in leadership team and clinical operations activities.
  • Attends Collaborative Care and All Staff meetings as available.
  • Trains and precepts AANPs and RNs to improve OB/GYN competencies, including relating to abortion, family planning and fertility, prenatal & postpartum care, procedures, gender affirming care, and routine preventative care.
  • Participates in TransLine meetings, content creation, and on-call consultation service.
  • Act as an ambassador for Lyon-Martin at events and for fundraising.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Maintains direct patient care schedule (in person) on average 2 days/months.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and leadership in trans care, intersex care, queer healthcare, gynecological care using a harm reduction model.
  • Provides OB/GYN care, within the scope of credentialed privileges and standardized procedures, to patients within an integrated delivery model according to pre-arranged schedules, documenting care promptly and following charting protocols and applicable CA state licensing requirements; completes patient sessions in a timely manner; closes notes and responds to messages within a maximum of 72 hrs (Ideally within 24 hrs).
  • Ensures appropriate follow-up for all aspects of ordered care (e.g., specialty referrals, laboratory results, radiology reports, etc.);
  • Responds to patient requests for information and assistance (e.g., form completion, prescription refills, etc.) in a timely manner;
  • Works collaboratively with mental health staff and other specialists to facilitate integration between departments in order to improve patient outcomes;
  • Provides clinical consultation to AANPs.
  • Obtains and maintains licensure, DEA registration and BLS/CPR certification;
  • Attends continuing professional education programs, at the request or with the approval of supervisor, demonstrating participation in required hours of continuing medical education according to California law.

Education, Knowledge, Skills:
  • For MD or DO
    • Graduation from accredited medical school.
    • Completion of internship and residency from accredited program.
    • Board Certified as OB/GYN
  • Possession of NPI number
  • Current California State License and Registration
  • DEA Controlled Substances Registration Certificate
  • Demonstrated leadership and expertise in the field of transgender, intersex and queer health
  • Bilingual English/Spanish language ability preferred
  • At minimum, 5 years clinical experience post-residency
  • At minimum, 1 year experience in leadership role, prefer 3+ years
  • Commitment to the mission of Lyon-Martin and to community-based primary care
  • Knowledge of California practice guidelines and malpractice laws
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; creativity and enthusiasm in problem-solving
  • Ability to work cooperatively, foster team spirit, show good judgment in unusual and emergent situations
