Established in 2003, The Center for Healthy Communities is the lead entity within the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama that is responsible for coordinating community education, research, public service and health activities to help eliminate health disparities, foster access to health care for medically underserved populations and enhance the capacity of individuals to better participate in decision making about their health. The Center seeks to facilitate and support the development of enduring healthy communities through community-engagement and interdisciplinary investigator-initiated research.

The Center for Healthy Communities has a long-standing record of engagement with the historically marginalized communities residing in the University of South Alabama's service area. The Center's participatory research projects and community informed programs have offered value to its neighboring communities, and have resulted in its recognition as an established academia-community engagement nucleus in the Gulf Coast Region.

Job Summary

Building on the Center's existent platform, and under the leadership of the Center's director, the incoming Director of Research will be responsible for consolidating and expanding the Center's capacity for Community Engaged Research and for the promotion of Health Equity by fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the University, providing CEnR expertise within regional and national research collaborations, and developing the Center's externally funded research portfolio.

In addition, the Director of Research will support the integration of community engagement throughout all phases of translational research at the Whiddon College of Medicine, while identifying needs and providing assistance with CEnR study design and implementation.

Essential responsibilities:

1. Contributes to the formulation of strategic goals for the Center.

2. Manages the day-to-day activities of the Center. This includes supervision of personnel and oversight of the Center's routine operations. Bears responsibility for design and management of externally funded budgets when serving in Principal Investigator or other key leadership capacity within research projects or programs.

3. Supports efforts to consolidate and expand the Center's capacity for community engagement and community engaged research (CEnR)

4. Conducts scholarly activity in the fields of community engagement & health equity research, and is among the University's leading educators in such areas.

5. Bears main responsibility for the attainment of extramural funding to expand the Center's research and programmatic endeavors

6. Assumes leadership roles of existing extramurally funded projects in the Center's portfolio (e.g.; the Alabama CEAL project, the Community Engagement Leadership within the UAB CCTS partnership, etc.)

7. Supports the CHC Director in efforts to incorporate the theory and practice of community engagement across all levels of medical education

8. Supports the integration of CEnR across the COM's research platform, with an emphasis on disseminating CEnR principles, theory and practice in support of translational research.

9. Supports the CHC Director in activities related to promoting USA Health's community engagement and social care efforts.

10. Supports the CHC Director in efforts to promote and strategically revise the Center's pipeline programs toward health and other STEM careers.

11. Leads efforts to nurture existing and develop new collaborations across the University to foster a robust base for inter- and trans-disciplinary health equity research.

12. Supports the CHC Director in efforts to nurture existing and develop new collaborations with community residents, organizations, healthcare institutions as well as both government and non-governmental agencies, in order to expand the Center's engagement base and strengthen its capacity to promote health equity.

Required Knowledge & Skills
• Significant knowledge of the principles of health equity research and expertise in best practices for community engagement, community-engaged research, and community-based participatory research.
• Understanding of equity issues in healthcare, public health, social services, and related areas relevant to Mobile County, the Gulf Coast Area, and nationwide.
• Commitment to and passion for improving health equity among historically marginalized communities.
• Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders, including community, governmental, and institutional partners.
• Demonstrated experience with grant/proposal development for extramural funding, preferably in partnership with community organizations.
• Experience in managing grant activities and grant budgets.
• Experience in scientific writing for peer-reviewed publication as well as for community audiences.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to network, collaborate and build relationships with academic and clinical colleagues, partners, staff, remote colleagues and others.
• Experience developing project budgets and analyzing efficiencies.
• Strong organizational, and project coordination skills

Qualifications:

- PhD with expertise in Public, Population or Community Health, and four (4) or more years of substantive, professional experience relevant to community engagement and health disparities/health equity research.

- Expertise in Implementation and Dissemination Science is highly desirable.

- A record of proposal development and submission, preferably related to CEnR, is strongly favored

- A record of project management capacity, as well as of administrative and leadership functions is desirable.

- Knowledge of a range of quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed-methods research approaches and related software packages (i.e., SAS, R, SPSS, Atlas Ti, NVivo, etc.) is required.
