Van Andel Institute (VAI), a leading independent biomedical research facility, is dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson's and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. Melissa Hoyer, Ph.D., is seeking to hire a full time Laboratory Manager to be a key part of her research team.
Dr. Hoyer's research investigates the cell biology of neurons, including how specialized pathways remove damaged or superfluous organelles. By engineering neurons with different quality control sensors and using fluorescence microscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, flow cytometry, proteomics, and other biochemical techniques, the Hoyer lab aims to better understand how to prevent neurodegenerative diseases at the molecular level.
In this role, you would be Dr. Hoyer's right hand person in the laboratory and tasked to:
* Manage and handle the day-to-day operational activities of the laboratory
* Participate in and facilitate staff laboratory research projects
* Successfully execute his/her own research projects
* Contribute in managing grants and laboratory budgets
* Provide mentorship for new and more junior staff
The individual should have curiosity about science and research and be self-driven, efficient, motivated and hard working.
The position will require the individual to possess the following skills:
* Expertise in several of the laboratory techniques which are routinely used in the Hoyer lab, which include (not all are required, but to have expertise in several is preferred):
* Stem cell culture
* Immunofluorescence and live cell fluorescence microscopy
* Basic molecular biology techniques (pipetting, molecular cloning, PCR)
* CRISPR/Cas9 or other forms on gene editing techniques
* Western blotting
* Flow cytometry sorting and analysis
* Computational biology, interpretation of data from proteomics
* Writing of scientific publications
QUALIFICATIONS
* The person must have at least a B.Sc. degree, however a Master's or PhD degree is preferred, in biological sciences, preferably but not necessarily in neuronal cell biology, and a good understanding of the theoretical basis for experimental procedures
* 2-5 years of biological science related experience, preferably conducting bench research
* Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Proficiency with statistical software such as GraphPad.
* An individual will the propensity for directing other lab members to maintain streamlined laboratory performance (ie keeping plasmid databases organized and other common materials well stocked) .
* A self-driven and hard-working individual who has a strong curiosity about basic science and its clinical application
* A highly organized multi-tasker who pays attention to detail and values research integrity
* A collegial team member with the ability to interact effectively and cordially with colleagues and collaborators
