UPMC Shadyside, a Magnet-designated hospital, is currently hiring Full-time, Part-time, and Casual Patient Care Technicians and Nursing Assistants to support one of the units within the hospital's ICU Service Line: 3 Main, 7 West, MSICU, CTICU, or SICU (unit descriptions below).

**Shadyside's Medicine Service Line:**

+ **3 Main, Surgical Cardiovascular** -3 Main is a 38-bed surgical unit caring for post-op cardiovascular and cardiothoracic patients. We care for high acuity patients recovering from open heart surgery, pacemaker insertion, aneurysms, and various thoracic and vascular surgeries. 3 Main a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where nurses will gain experience with chest tubes, trachs, monitors, pacemakers, and arrhythmia IV drips. 3 Main is fast-paced and team-oriented and serves as Shadyside's cardiac step-down unit.

+ **7 West, Neuro-Oncology/Neuro-Surgery** - 7 West is a 24-bed newly renovated Neuro-Oncology/Neuro-Surgery unit that cares for postoperative craniotomies and spinal surgeries related to tumor debulking, stroke patients, and acute/chronic neurological conditions. We also see a diverse population of oncology patients and some medical patients.

+ **MSICU, Medical Surgical ICU -** The Medical-Surgical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is an 8-bed critical care facility primarily serving patients recovering from thoracic and foregut surgeries, though we also occasionally see other types of medical and surgical patients including vascular, urological, and orthopedic. We are a small unit with a caring culture and a focus on patient comfort and safety.

+ **CTICU, Thoracic Surgery/CTICU -** UPMC Shadyside 2 Main is a Thoracic Surgical unit with a highly specialized and supportive team of nurses. We work with post Op Thoracic procedures such as VATs, Esophagectomies, Lung resections, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, lumbar drains, Swan-Ganz catheters, CRRT, and vasoactive drips, and receive some overflow from other ICUs during high census.

+ **SICU, Surgical ICU -** The Surgical ICU at UPMC Shadyside is a two-time AACN Beacon Award-winning critical care unit that cares for a variety of surgical patients, excluding open heart and neurosurgery. Our primary focus is surgical oncology; however, our patient population also includes critically ill medical patients as well as vascular, urological, and general surgical patients with post-operative complications. We frequently use continuous cardiac and invasive pressure monitoring, ventilators, BIPAP, CRRT, wound vacs, and drains.

_Unit placement will be determined by candidate preference and current hospital needs. Please specify which unit is your preference in the questionnaire when applying to the position._

Nursing Support roles are **required** to work rotating shifts, which include daylight, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians will also be required to work 12-hour shifts, with a possibility of a combination of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.

All hired candidates will complete a **mandatory training course** . This is a **paid training program** that spans over two weeks. The main program is weekdays only and daylight hours, with a combination of virtual and in-person days. Attendance is mandatory for the entire training. A one-day training is available on Saturdays for those who have completed a clinical rotation in a hospital or have specific transferable in-patient/hospital experience.

The Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians provide routine patient care and support the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role will be directed by nurses and/or physicians to ensure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times. Patient care duties may include, but are not limited to, ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients, and blood glucose), vital signs, simple dressings, EKGs, bladder scans, and all specimen collections.

+ **Patient Care Technician - Lead** :

**Responsibilities:**

+ Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and turning and repositioning patients), PLUS point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), and clean catch/mini catheter urine collection. In addition, simple dressings, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections.

+ All competencies must be achieved.
