The Academic Coordinator works with Las Maestras Center's two Co-Directors to develop and implement initiatives, programming, and partnerships consistent with the vision of LMC, including an artist-in-residence program, graduate seminars, creative writing and arts workshops, and inter-collegiate gatherings; as well as ongoing public engagements, such as the Latinx Public Voice series, Xicana[x] Indigenous Values conversations and research initiatives, the Transnational Women of Color Feminism Living Digital Archive project, a graduate student research and internship program; and more.

LMC administers approximately eight public events per year. The Center also co-sponsors and collaborates in the production of campus lectures, panel discussions, and community-based cultural events and lectures that actively engage the local Santa Barbara community as well as an international audience through virtual programming. As the Co-Directors often shift in the directorship and conceptual implementation of particular events, usually mandated by areas of expertise, the Associate Director assists whichever Director at the helm and typically serves as the central manager for the practical execution of such events, coordinating publicity and overseeing the organizational pieces required for successful outcomes by directing tasks and timelines for student volunteers and staff.

The Associate Director also assists the Co-Directors' management of public relations and outreach to the community and helps develop strong working relationships with relevant departments, campus units, community organizations, related centers at other institutions, academic organizations, and granting foundations in order to reach the overall goals of Las Maestras Center.

Program Administration

The Associate Director performs administrative functions, serving as a key contact and manager for visiting speakers and resident artists, (e.g. coordinating itineraries, travel plans, etc.), as well as for UCSB faculty, staff and students, and the off-campus community. The AD is also responsible for assisting the Co-Directors in implementing research and community engagement opportunities for UCSB students and faculty associated with LMC. The AD attends all LMC events (including those that take place on evenings and weekends).

General Administration, Supervision and Grant Writing

In consultation with the Co-Directors, the AD hires, trains, and supervises the part-time student employees and staff of Las Maestras Center. The AD assists the Co-Directors with the management of existing budget lines. A primary role of the AD is to facilitate the programmatic and financial growth of LMC through developing grant applications, identifying relevant foundation opportunities, and cultivating LMC's community of individual donors.

Community Relations

The Associate Director assists, Co-Director, Celia Herrera Rodriguez in cultivating and solidifying collaborative relationships with Latinx community groups in Santa Barbara, as well as with more mainstream Arts/Cultural organizations and foundations that may be interested in providing space and/or funding opportunities for projects in Santa Barbara. The AD also manages organizational relations with LMC's community and collegiate partners.

Program Analysis and Evaluation

The AD analyzes LMC's budget and prepares regular and ad hoc reports to LMC's Co-Directors on LMC's finances, grant writing and reporting, and program analysis. The AD monitors the demographics of program attendance and works with other campus centers and programs both to coordinate co-sponsored events and to ensure diversity of participants and audience.
