Job Details

The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Route Driver I, Route Driver II or Senior Route Driver classification. The salary range for the Route Driver I is $20.48 - $23.56 per hour; the range for the Route Driver II is $21.50 - $24.73 and for the Senior Route Driver position is $22.58 - $25.97 per hour.

The schedule for the Route Driver position is a four day work week with Fridays off.

Route Driver I

Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Route Driver is responsible for operating trucks and specialized equipment used in the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and other materials.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Route Driver series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Route Driver, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

* Operates refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transports loads to various refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
* Operates various heavy specialized equipment.
* Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment for safety checks and to ensure proper performance and operation.
* Performs routine maintenance for assigned vehicle and equipment; reports any repair needs to supervisor.
* May assist in inspecting incoming loads of yard debris and recycling for contamination.
* Responds to routine customer inquiries; refers complaints or problems to supervisor as needed.
* Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The Route Driver determines whether assigned vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition and whether any actual or potential safety hazards exist prior to operating. The incumbent determines appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work. The incumbent must determine if materials in accordance with City ordinances to allow collection.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Proper operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in collection; safety requirements and standards applicable to operating vehicles and equipment; appropriate safety equipment and procedures; applicable ordinances, regulations, and policies regarding the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and yard debris; City of Plano streets and address locations.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety policies, procedures, and regulations; completing basic mathematical calculations.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment and vehicles.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class "B" Commercial driver's license (prior to employment) for Environmental Waste Services division.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Route Driver II

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Route Driver II is responsible for operating two trucks and specialized equipment as needed used in the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and materials used in composting operations and in the maintenance of composting facilities. Assigned to a specific route unless business needs require a temporary reassignment to assist in covering down routes.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Route Driver series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Route Driver, Senior in that the latter position is a higher-level class in the series that has more experience performing Environmental Waste equipment operations and routes.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City composting, recycling, and refuse facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on unimproved/improved surfaces or streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when loading materials and completing maintenance. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings, streets, and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, dust, toxic waste, chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
