Experience

Heavy Equipment Mechanic 8

No specific type or amount is required.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9

Two years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10

Four years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, including two years equivalent to a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9.

Possession of an associate degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment Repair may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

  

Completion of 12 semester (18 term) credits in one or more of the following coursework areas: heavy duty truck, heavy equipment repair, diesel engines, math, or physics may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of automobiles may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications

 

 Heavy Equipment Mechanic 8-9:  

Possession of a Commercial Learner's Permit at the time of hire and possession of a valid CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions is required within 12 months of the date of hire into the position.

 

 Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10-11:  

Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required upon appointment and possession of a valid CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions is required within 12 months of the date of hire into the position. 

Preferred, State of Michigan or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Mechanic Certification in Heavy Truck and Air Brake.
