This Research Assistant Professor is to work in the Neuroendovascular division of the Department of Neurology. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. or an M.D. / Ph.D. from an accredited university in the Basic Sciences, Neuroscience, or other field relevant to stroke research, at least two years postdoctoral experience in neurological research, familiarity with small and large animal models, and a strong publication record.

The Research Assistant Professor will directly report to the Chief of the Neuroendovascular Division, Dr. Dileep R. Yavagal, M.D.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Interact with researchers involved in basic science, translational and clinical research activities to advance the research goals of the group including clot retrieval and stem cell based therapies for the treatment of acute and chronic stroke.
* Collaborate with leading stroke physicians, scientists, and clinicians to advance the field of cell-based therapies for stroke.
* Oversee IACUC regulated animal models.
* Develop appropriate and detailed animal protocols in compliance with all Federal and Institutional animal welfare regulations.
* Develop cell-based therapies in small and large animal models of stroke in which intra-arterial and other modes of cell delivery.
* Perform neurological surgeries including middle cerebral artery occlusion and other endovascular surgical techniques.
* Perform animal neurological, motor, and cognitive assessments.
* Disseminate findings to international meetings and peer-reviewed journals.
* Appointee is expected to have achieved national recognition in their field as evidenced by publications in quality journals and presentations at national meetings as well as by being awarded grants from federal and private organizations.
* Direct research in translational models that will make significant contribution to FDA-IND submissions and development of human clinical trials.
* Obtain Institutional, State, and Federal funding to support this research.
* Optimization and validation of stem cell IA vs. IV delivery in small and large animal research models.
* Optimal time points of delivery, and choice of stem cell type and the mechanisms of cell base therapies.
* Strengths and weaknesses of these models, differences in the results of small and large animal models.
* Transfer IA cell base therapies to clinical applications.
* Identification and implementation of process improvements.
* Execute and troubleshoot decisional experiments that support contract deliverables.
* Preparation of progress reports and data entry.
* Mentor and train undergraduates, medical students, or residents in projects that support the laboratory goals and research.
* Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

Ph.D. or M.D. / Ph.D. At least two years of postdoctoral experience in neurological research. Evidence of dissemination of new research information. Strong publication record and success in individually funded grant awards is preferred. Any relevant education, certifications, and/or work experience may be considered.
