The Center for New York City Affairs at The New School/Milano seeks a highly motivated graduate student to serve as a part-time Research Associate. This position researches and writes about child welfare and related issues, manages projects and partnerships.
The Center for New York City Affairs (CNYCA) is an applied policy research organization at The New School that addresses the city's most pressing social and economic challenges. We focus on inequality and serve the interests of low-income communities. The populations we serve include low-wage workers, public school families, families in the child welfare and homeless systems, and formerly incarcerated men and women. Community members, nonprofits, policymakers, and media rely on CNYCA's timely research and public engagement to inform service delivery, hold systems accountable, and drive policy change.
Since 1997, the Center's Child Welfare Watch project has focused on vulnerable children, youth, and families. We identify constructive reforms that strengthen families, respect the rights of parents, and help children thrive. CNYCA and its Child Welfare Watch has long been a trusted resource for bringing together stakeholders to inform policy and programs that support the well-being of families and their children. Charged with protecting children from abuse and neglect, the child welfare system (often referred to as the family regulation system) is widely criticized for failing to protect children, for the poor outcomes of children in its care, and for overstepping its mission and harming families. The system disproportionately targets families of color and stark racial disparities have persisted despite decades of reform. Our priorities in the coming years are to monitor the child welfare system and to convene and inform a diverse coalition. CNYCA is a co-convener of the Narrowing the Front Door coalition and the Research Assistant will support this initiative.

* Research and write memos and reports on child and family policies and programs, with a particular focus on child welfare issues.
* Support the Narrowing the Front Door coalition, including project management, planning events and activities, and conducting research.
Rate: $22.08/hr
