Description

The Cary Public Works Department is seeking a skilled automotive mechanic to join our team in performing preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on a variety of automotive, small engine, construction, and specialized equipment. As part of the Fleet Maintenance Division, theFleet Maintenance Technician I will have a unique opportunity toproudly support Cary's commitment to changing lives through providing excellent service.

The ideal candidate can work well in a fast-paced environment to assess, troubleshoot and repair vehicles and small equipment while working individually or as a team. The candidate will be flexible, self-motivated, and take initiative exceed or internal and external customers' expectations. A Fleet Maintenance Technician I is a key member of the Adverse Weather Response Team.Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fleet Division Manager.

Typical Tasks

Diagnoses, repairs, and overhauls brake systems, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and on-board computer systems;

Performs scheduled preventive maintenance service;

Processes work orders through the FASTER fleet management software;

Performs service, repair and replacement work, cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hoses, and replacing belts;

Overhauls engines;

Changes, repairs and replaces tires;

Services specialized hybrid and electric vehicles and diagnosis of related electrical malfunctions;

Performs cooling system repairs; removes and replaces radiators, hoses, and water pumps;

Tunes engines using standard testing equipment;

Diagnoses electrical shorts- installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters;

Assists other mechanics in more difficult or heavy work;

Performs field servicing of vehicles to repair or replace tires, batteries, or other cases of operational failure;

Accesses database to enter information on work orders and assign labor hours;

Participates in cleaning shop area;

Completes repair forms;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of equipment; skill in the use and the operations of tools and machinery used in equipment repair work; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts; ability to keep records of parts and time for repairs and service operations; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to obtain ASE certifications; ability to access database to enter information on repairs; ability to follow oral and written instruction accurately.

Physical Requirements:

An employee may not have a significant impairment of any of the major life functions in that work requires considerable physical strength in lifting heavy objects. This includes the physical ability to walk, stand for long periods, reach, stoop, climb, etc. The ability to see is also necessary to read and write handwritten and typewritten information and make necessary repairs. The employee must also be able to hear.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in repairing a variety of automotive and heavy equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record;

Requires National Incident Management System (NIMS) training (provided);

Possession of OBD II certification;

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications preferred.
