General Functions

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is a member of a multi-disciplinary care team working to support participants in their recovery journey, within a residential treatment setting. The BHT facilitates skill development, serves as direct care, and promotes safety in the milieu, while utilizing trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented approaches. This role engages in highly interactive and supportive encounters with participants and utilizes contact with participants to promote strengths and support growth. The BHT also assists the program with technical and clinical needs, organizing and maintaining the facility, and transporting and supervising participants in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Behavioral Health Technician, I
  • Monitors day to day program schedules.
  • Works to promote a therapeutic and supportive milieu culture and environment.
  • Participates in milieu and communicates any issues or concerns within the program.
  • Complete required and assigned documentation by using shift reports and interdepartmental communications.
  • Facilitates verbal de-escalation skills when necessary.
  • Understands and uses Trauma-Informed and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques.
  • Provide social and emotional support to participants within the Recovery Services programs.
  • Monitors and controls visitor and guest access per Recovery Services protocols and ensure adherence to procedures and program expectations.
  • Supports participants and staff to meet and maintain all health and safety standards per CITC's policies and procedures.
  • Monitors participant passes, to ensure adherence to proper procedure and program expectations.
  • Assists in a commercial kitchen environment and to support food service for the participants.
  • Communicates any participant behavioral or emotional presentations to the treatment team.
  • Works closely with staff and participants to follow the program manual, policies, and procedures.
  • Assists with scheduled participant meetings with approved family, tele-psych, and clinicians, to ensure seamless facilitation of groups, one-on-ones, training, etc.
  • Works collaboratively with all employees and team members toward achieving program goals.
  • Transports participants on assigned activities, case management services, and outings as needed.
  • Attends scheduled off-campus activities in support of the approved program goals such as fishing, hiking, canoeing, berry picking.
  • Monitors participants' self-administration of medication, to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Documents all medical appointments, referrals, and medication transactions in support of all program policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a respectful relationship with participants, former participants, family members, and peers in full accordance with HIPAA and 42CFR part 2 regulations.
  • Promotes program rules and expectations for all participants.
  • Models professional, respectful, caring, calm demeanor in all interactions.
  • Maintains, organizes, and keeps clean assigned areas and surrounding offices.
  • Attends and participates in relevant training and meetings within assigned timeframes.
  • Completes administrative duties as expected.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned.

Behavioral Health Technician, II
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Technician I with higher efficiency and independence level.
  • Supports case management efforts.
  • Coordinates training/in-services for Behavioral Health Technicians.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Behavioral Health Technician, III
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Technician I & II with higher efficiency and independence level.
  • Audits Behavioral Health Technician documentation for quality assurance
  • Provides training to other Behavioral Health Technicians
  • Supports the Program Supervisor with duties and tasks as assigned

Job Responsibilities Related to Participant Privacy
  • Employee is expected to actively participate in CITC privacy training and to protect the privacy of participant information in accordance with CITC's privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law. Failure to comply with CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Employee may access protected health information and other participant information only to the extent necessary to complete job duties. Employee may only share such information on a need-to-know basis with others who have job responsibilities related to treatment, payment, or other CITC operations.
  • Employee is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy and any observed practices in violation of the policy to the designated Privacy Officer.

Job Specifications:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; public speaking, knowledge of proper grammar and vocabulary, spelling, and proofreading skills.
  • Must have strong writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy of fact reporting.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Ability to work with a PC and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and ability to make decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and prioritize workload.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to coordinate multiple activities.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience conducting individual and group sessions.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be cross trained in any aspect of the program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Behavioral Health Technician, I
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of professional and supervised social service or related work experience, preferably in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment; OR a combination of education and experience with major course work and experience in Counseling, Psychology, and/or Social Sciences.

Behavioral Health Technician, II
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of professional and supervised social service or related work experience, preferably in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment; OR a combination of education and experience with major course work and experience in Counseling, Psychology, and/or Social Sciences.

Behavioral Health Technician III
  • Associates Degree in Human Services, Psychology or related field. Bachelor's degree in a related field may count on a year per year basis in lieu of experience.
  • Three (3) years of professional and supervised social service or related work experience working in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment; OR a combination of education and experience with major course work and experience in Counseling, Psychology, and/or Social Sciences.
  • Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor II (CDC II)

Minimum qualifications for All Levels;
  • Alaska Food Handlers Card, or ability to obtain one upon hire .
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years .

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a milieu and/or residential treatment setting.
  • Experience in applied behavior analysis.
  • Training in and experience using Motivational Interviewing techniques.
  • Meets criteria as a State of Alaska Qualified Addiction Professional.
  • Experience in the substance use or mental health treatment services.
  • Experience with EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems.

Physical Requirements:
  • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
  • Regularly sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Assist in facilitating recreational and subsistence activities, often outdoors.
  • Assist in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
