Essential functions (job duties):

Wayne State University Law School seeks an Academic Services Officer II/III to serve in the capacity of the Law School's Assistant Director of Bar Exam Preparation. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Career Success, this position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing bar preparation support programming and services for law students both before and after graduation, including providing individualized counseling services to law students and graduates on all content-related areas related to bar exam passage.

Bar Preparation:

Develop, coordinate, and implement bar preparation support programming and services for Law School students both before and after graduation.

Provide individual counseling services to Law School students on all content-related areas related to bar exam passage, including academic and bar preparation course selection, effective bar exam essay writing and effective studying and test-taking skills related to the Multistate Bar Examination, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, and the Uniform Bar Examination, and all matters related to post-exam content-related appeals.

Create, conduct, and coordinate workshops and other programs for Law School students on topics relevant to bar passage, including programming tailored to the needs of different groups of Law School students and graduates (e.g., first-year v. third-year, part-time/evening v. full-time, graduates who failed applicable bar examination on first attempt v. multiple attempts, and graduates wanting to appeal bar results).

As needed, identify and refer to the Law School's Assistant Dean for Student Affairs any students/graduates with character and fitness issues related to admissions to the bar.

Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of available outside bar preparation and support services and management of any/all Law School contracts with outside vendors for bar preparation support programming and services.

Coordinate with Law School Admissions Office, Law School Office of Student Affairs, Law School Office of Career and Professional Development Office, and Law School faculty to identify current Law School students and graduates potentially or currently in need of individualized content-related bar exam counseling services.

Maintain up-to-date awareness of applicable bar examination content and bar application requirements, with an emphasis on the development and status of the NextGen bar exam, the Michigan bar application, the Multistate Bar Examination, and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, but also the Uniform Bar Examination and other statespecific bar examinations to the extent relevant to current Law School students; provide appropriate updates as needed to relevant persons within the Law School.

Gather, compile, and report to Dean's Office ongoing and up-to-date statistical data regarding student participation in, and impact on student performance of, all bar-related programming and services, both such programming and services provided by/contracted for by the Law School and external programming and services to the extent Law School students/graduates enroll/participate in such programming and services.

Other:

Serve on Law School and University committees as assigned.

Teach courses within areas of practice expertise and/or bar exam preparation as assigned by Law School Associate Dean.

Other duties as assigned by Law School Dean's Office related to academic success and support, regulatory compliance, and bar examination support.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor degree required from an ABA-accredited law school.

Minimum 1 to 3 years' experience in higher education in relevant area: academic advising, curricular planning, student affairs or directly related experience. Law school experience, particularly in academic advising or bar preparation strongly preferred.

Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.

Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents within the diverse Law School community, including students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of academic preparedness and from diverse populations.

Availability to work occasional evenings weekends hours.

Successful admission to state bar preferred.
