Assists staff within the Ecological and Marine Resources Division of the Manatee County Natural Resources Department.
Working Conditions
Indoor office and outdoor field environment. Performs strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions. Traverses uneven or rugged terrain. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting and carrying equipment up to 25 lbs. alone and up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Regularly required to operate county vehicles, including trucks, trailers, mowers, and boats, as part of the duties of the job. Able to climb and descend equipment and ladders. Able to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach. Position requires visual acuity and depth perception, as well as ability to hear and identify sounds. Occasionally required to work other than normal business hours, including nights and weekends.
Job Description
Essential Functions
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.
Assists with enforcement of the County's Lost and Abandoned Vessels Ordinance. Educates vessel owners and other interested parties about the ordinance and related laws and regulations. Assists with code enforcement duties related to enforcing the ordinance. Follows all established laws, regulations, and procedures related to vessel removal, including administrative processing.
Inspects Aids to Navigation, such as swim buoys and channel markers. Writes work assignments as needed. Oversees and inspects contractor project work.
Provides diving assistance for new permitted reef sites, reef monitoring, reef cleanup, deployments, and deployment bottom surveys.
Assists with resolution of citizen inquiries and complaints related to waterway management, including missing and damaged signs, marine debris, and navigational obstructions and hazards.
Assists with scanning and filing documents in preparation for archiving.
Assists with Ecological Resources Program projects as required on habitat restoration projects.
Follows all established safety standards and procedures in order to protect self, other employees, and the general public.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) or more years of experience in a natural resource management, ecology, or marine science.
Valid driver license required, with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
A compatible combination of education, training, and work experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Florida Boater Safety Certificate approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Ability to safely operate and trailer a boat. SCUBA certification desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Organizes own work and completes tasks within assigned timeframes. Able to resolve routine situations and problems.
General knowledge and understanding of current principles and practices in marine resource management, conservation, restoration, and protection. Good knowledge and understanding of local flora and fauna pertaining to area of assignment.
Ability to work in outdoor environments performing habitat enhancements (SUV surveys, coastal vegetation monitoring, native plantings, oyster deployments, wildlife surveys, etc.).
Able to read work specifications, site plans, schematic drawings, and blueprints.
General knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job responsibilities, including environmental resource permitting and state and local regulations regarding waterways management and lost, abandoned, and derelict vessels.
General knowledge and understanding of computer systems and software applications required to perform job duties, including GIS and GPS.
Willingness to support community outreach and education (e.g., marine debris, reef and shoreline cleanups, nuisance species eradication, planting events, etc.), engage with citizens and agency partners (e.g., National Estuary Programs).
Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to interact professionally and effectively with staff, the general public, and other stakeholders.
Able to communicate routine information.
Able to use tact and diplomacy in situations that may involve angry or frustrated citizens.
Capable of working under moderate supervision.
