* UT Health Tyler, the flagship hospital of the system, has 502 licensed beds specializing in advanced acute care medicine. Our hospital includes a 24-hour ER with Level 1 trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center, more than 500 physicians and a full complement of subspecialty groups.

Responsibilities

* Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
* Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
* Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
* Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
* Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
* Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
* Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
* Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol.
* Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
* Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
* Answers laboratory department phone calls.
* Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned.
* Courier duties as assigned.
* Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.
* Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient centered manner as assigned.
* Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
* Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
* Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
* May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.
* Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned.
* Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing.
* Assists other laboratory personnel with laboratory related processes as assigned.
* Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

* High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred Job Requirements

* Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist upon hire
* Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date
* Experience working in the clinical setting
