Job Description

POSITION SCOPE

Full-time teaching assistant work cohesively with the lead teachers and aftercare workers. The job duties range from organizing materials and cleaning the workspace to facilitating the learning process for each child. Assistants are expected to support the Early Childcare/Montessori teaching method and aftercare needs. Specifically, assistants must help guide the child through self-directed activities, allowing the child to develop at his or her own pace and monitor the needs of children in a morning and aftercare setting. In Montessori and aftercare environments, assistants are expected to foster, along with the lead teachers, a nurturing and stimulating non-competitive environment.

Daily Routine
An assistant's day begins early, often before the teacher, to begin the daily preparations. The Montessori and aftercare environment is clean, beautiful and at all times, welcoming and inviting to the children. Preparation work is completed before the children arrive so that they may start working as soon as they enter the classroom. In addition to preparing the environment, the Montessori assistant may be responsible for:
  • Preparing snack
  • Greeting children and parents as they arrive
  • Assisting children with outdoor clothing and shoes
  • Observing children's needs and adjusting the activities based on the level of energy
  • Observing the dynamics of the classroom and looking where to be most useful
  • Ensuring safety and harmony outdoors
  • Helping children get ready, wash hands, etc., at lunch and after care snack time
  • Supervising at nap time
  • Administrative duties - filing papers, making copies, laminating and cutting materials, sharpening pencils, cutting paper, etc.
  • Replenishing supplies, snacks, etc.
  • Checking to ensure that all parts to all the materials are in working order
  • Cleaning the classroom and shelves at the end of each day

The Montessori classroom and after care assistant is more than someone who cleans the classroom. The assistant inspires and guides children through modeling and examples. He/she is an extra pair of hands, a watchful eye, and a comforting smile. They confident and happy to be contributing to the lives of children.

Reinforce Instruction

After the classroom teacher introduces or teaches a lesson, the assistant reinforces learning by offering individual or small group instruction, answering questions and helping students who don't understand the lesson; the assistant may sometimes introduce or teach part of the lesson under the guidance of the teacher.

Prepare Materials and Equipment

Assistants prepare materials for the class under the direction of the teacher. These might be materials for future lessons or activities, special events, classroom decorations or means for displaying student work. They may also prepare audio-visual equipment while the teacher is giving instruction, get computers ready for the students to use, or any other preparation that saves the teacher time and keeps things running smoothly.

Perform Clerical Work

Elementary teaching involves a lot of paperwork, so the teacher may ask the assistant to help by reviewing student's daily work recording students' progress, checking homework and drafting correspondence to parents. The assistant may also be asked to organize materials, distribute work into individual students' folders or handle routine filing.

Supervise Students

Students often move from the classroom to other areas of the school, but they cannot go on their own. A teacher's aide is invaluable in supervising the students as they go to special classes such as art, music or physical education, to lunch or the playground, and to and from/on the bus. The aide may also take the teacher's place supervising the lunchroom, recess or loading and unloading the buses.

General Characteristics
The Montessori teaching assistant values and respects the uniqueness of each child while consistently nurturing and modeling a love of learning. The assistant often finds oneself in the role of helping to resolve conflicts between children. The assistant must be able to use positive language to redirect student behavior. The assistant is a keen observer and is knowledgeable about developmentally-appropriate behavior and practices and aware of the individual needs and interests of the children.

While the Montessori teacher is presenting lessons, the Montessori assistant moves quietly throughout the classroom. They understand the importance of the uninterrupted, three-hour work cycle and value the importance of the children's work as well as the necessity for intense concentration.
