The Wauwatosa Health Department is seeking a passionate and dynamic individual to join us as an Environmental Health Specialist. The City of Wauwatosa is seeking applicants who will monitor, evaluate, inspect, and enforce all environmental health programs of the Wauwatosa Health Department (WHD) and applicable local municipal ordinances and state statutes.
One exciting project that the Health Department is working on is the implementation of a new licensing and inspection program for Short-Term Rentals (STRs) in Wauwatosa. Beginning in 2024, all STRs in Wauwatosa must be licensed through the health department, with annual inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. The starting salary for this position ranges from ($62,420.80 to $85,592.00 +/- annually), depending on experience and qualifications. Effective June 16, 2024, the City of Wauwatosa is implementing a new compensation plan. The Environmental Health Specialist position will have a salary range of ($76,606.40 to $97,884.80 +/- annually). Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Interviews will be held during the week of May 20th.
Essential Functions
The following are normal for the position but shall not be construed as exclusive or inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
* Provides environmental health inspections and education for licensed food establishments, recreational waters, lodging, school cafeterias, and vending to ensure compliance as part of the State-agent inspection program.
* Documents inspection findings and enforces municipal ordinances and state statutes including orders to correct violations and issuing citations; provides court summaries using documentation.
* Provides environmental health programs and services to promote health and prevent diseases such as radon awareness, safe lead remediation procedures, and education on other home health hazards.
* Conduct investigations into nuisance complaints and reported human health hazards; issue orders to ensure compliance, and monitor cases as needed.
* Investigates, monitors, and enforces municipal health ordinances and state statutes regarding the control of animals and rabies prevention.
* Monitors and evaluates environmental health data and trends.
* Provides education to the community on all environmental health topics.
* Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives.
* Assists with preparedness grant deliverables.
* Assist with the development and implementation of strategies to increase the integration of health equity into department programs and services.
Minimum Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, the physical or biological sciences or a related field.
* Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) is required within six months of hire.
* Valid Driver's License and valid auto insurance must be maintained throughout employment.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.
* Ability to complete specific training modules per the National Incident Management System (NIMS) standards within the first year of hire.
Preferred Requirements
* Three years of experience in the field of environmental health.
* Proficiency in HealthSpace.
* A lead (Pb) hazard investigator certification is preferred at the time of hire; required within one year of hire.
* Ability to communicate (verbal and written) in a second language.
Additional Information
This position receives supervision and direction from the Public Health Manager.
