About the Opportunity:
Responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, operation, inspection, and modification of all electrical services to include electronic controls and programmable computer interfacing for a medical training education, research, and teaching facility consisting of over one million square feet under the direction of the Electrical Operations Manager and Lead Electrician. These duties are performed at the WVU Health Sciences Center.

- While performing other duties and working from blueprints and specifications and in conjunction with architects, engineers, Lead Electrician, and/or factory representatives, installs or provides for special equipment unique to each project such as X-Ray, laboratory, laundry, kitchen, etc.
- Provides electrical power for signal circuits and equipment such as fire alarms, phones, computers, P.A. systems, intercoms, TV, satellite, audio visual, etc.
- Makes installation or provisions for equipment and controls of HVAC equipment, pumps, compressors etc.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects, electrical conduit, tubing, surface raceways and accessories, bussducts, and cable trays of all types, sizes, and styles.
- Builds, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and/or repairs motors, motor controls, motor control centers, and interfaces with all necessary external equipment such as fire alarms, computers, safety devices, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, programmable and digital controls or equipment.
- Performs preventative and emergency maintenance of electrical lighting as assigned in compliance with current codes.
- Builds, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and/or repairs motors, motor controls, motor control centers, and interfaces with all necessary external equipment such as fire alarms, computers, safety devices, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, programmable and digital controls or equipment.
- Performs preventative and emergency maintenance of electrical lighting as assigned in compliance with current codes.
- Builds, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and/or repairs lighting systems for multi-media classrooms where audio-visual, computer digital or programmable controls must be used or interfaced.
- Installs, operates, inspects and repairs high voltage distribution equipment inside and outside the building and makes cable splices in underground applications, manholes, vaults, tunnels, and distribution equipment. Installs, maintains, operates and repairs emergency power systems such as generators, transfer switches, battery backup (UPS) systems, emergency lighting, etc.
- Inspects, troubleshoots and repairs electric powered hand tools, custodial equipment, and appliances
- .Performs functional and operational testing using electronic test equipment and meters. Operates equipment to include motorized and hydraulic benders, wire pulling winches, core drills hydraulic benders, wire pulling winches, core drills hydraulic punching tools, portable and stationary saws and drills, vacuum and pressure operated fishing systems. Utilizes truck-mounted lift bucket.
- May be required to operate and utilize various department computer software, fill in for Lead, assist other crafts in performance of assigned duties and train other individuals as assigned.
Work Hours: Mon-Fri 7a-3p
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must have one of the following:
- 2 years of electrical experience.
- Completion of an associate degree as an electrical technician.
- Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational electrical program.
- The broad base and high level of sophistication of electrical, electronic, and computer equipment involved in the performance of this position mandates this level of education and training be at journeyman level electrical training and have successfully met the WV state license requirement.
- A minimum of one (1) year of successful completion of a journeyman electrician training program which includes:
- Successful completion of an apprentice training program or equivalent
- An additional 1-2 years in the electrical field with emphasis on electronic controls and computer interfacing is needed to enable the applicant to work independently without direct or continuous supervision.
- Knowledge of industry, university, and Health Science Center electrical, telecommunications, and electronic standards, concepts and plans. (Knowledge of local policies can be obtained after the start of employment)
- Demonstrated ability to perform work at the journeyman electrician level.
- Knowledge of material check-out procedures and warehouse functions.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal building safety, fire, electrical, and construction codes.
- Knowledge of industrial and environmental hazards and how to deal with them.
- Knowledge of low voltage power supply equipment and UPS systems.
- Knowledge of the use of personal computers and electronic mail.
- Knowledge of technical terms related to the electrical, telecommunication, electronic, and computer fields.
- Knowledge of major electrical distribution systems and standby equipment to include installation and maintenance.
- Ability to correctly use tools common to the electrical and related trades.
- Ability to set electrical panels, install internal equipment and make proper connections.
- Ability to make excellent eye to hand coordination for wire and cable splicing and ability to work in close quarters.
- Ability to install rigid and flexible conduit of varying dimensions, wiremold, raceways, and cable trays for high voltage for electrical wiring.
- Ability to read and prepare blue prints, schematics, and installation instructions.
- Ability to work in a stressful environment.
- Ability to work in inclement weather condition.
- Ability to hear and interpret sounds in a construction area or on a buy job site.
- Ability to safely lift materials and heavy objects over 50 pounds.
- Ability to use technical test equipment and troubleshooting devices required to prevent failures and/or isolate sources upon occurrence.
- Ability to climb and work safely at heights over 10 feet.
- Ability work in extreme hot or cod areas such as steam tunnels and coolers.
- Ability to stoop, bend, walk or crawl in close, rough, uncomfortable or slippery ceilings or chases.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations typical for the electrical trade.
- Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work with multi-craft personnel and people outside the department.
- Valid driver's license
- Valid WV state electrical license (Journeyman) preferred.
- Electrical License required
