GENERAL DESCRIPTION- UNION POSITION:
Central City Health is committed to enabling every patient in our community to thrive by building a collaborative multidisciplinary healthcare team. The Medical Assistant (MA) is required to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities in a manner that emphasizes quality care and customer service. The MA works collaboratively with clinical and support staff in the provision of direct patient services, exhibiting flexibility and a “can-do” attitude. The Medical Assistant serves as a point of contact for other internal and external providers, with the goal of fostering an environment that promotes patient comfort, trust, and team-based care. The MA must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy and tact in patient/staff interactions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensures all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner.
  • Prepares for patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to the visit, including checking for recent test results, lab results and correspondence and reviewing the previous note to determine reason for return.
  •  Maintains exam rooms according to protocol, including cleaning and sanitizing rooms and equipment between patient visits and ensuring that rooms are well stocked with necessary supplies. 
  • Monitors stock inventory and reports low stock to the Clinical Care Manager to ensure timely reordering of supplies. 
  • Triages patients effectively within fifteen minutes of registration time; communicates significant delays in service to the Clinical Care Manager.  
  • Assists patients in obtaining supportive services (resource assistance, insurance enrollment, etc.) as needed.
  • Completes thorough and accurate MA assessment, including vitals (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, waist circumference), past social, medical and family history, preferred pharmacy and applicable standing orders.  
  • Reviews patients’ Care Registry for due or overdue screenings; prepares necessary paperwork as indicated.
  • Maintains compliance with productivity requirements ensuring timely completion of documentation; MA assessments must be completed prior to the provider exam; onsite tasks must be completed by the end of the business day. 
  •  Assists provider upon request during examinations; practices universal precautions with respect to established safety protocols; facilitates communication with the provider(s).
  • Prepares and administers medications per documented provider order.
  • Performs lab related follow up and reminder calls.
  • Utilizes time in a constructive and efficient manner by assisting in such duties as restocking supplies and ensuring that all clinical areas are clean and orderly. 
  • Performs general clerical duties in support of patient services according to the needs of the clinic as directed by management, nursing staff or provider staff.  This includes, but is not limited to, answering phones, photocopies, faxing, completing forms, contacting patients, and updating patient demographics and/or insurance information. 
  • Performs documented quality checks on equipment per protocol and promptly reports damaged or missing equipment. 
  • Performs MA level procedures including EKGs, injections, laboratory draws, point of care testing, breathing treatments and dressing changes. 
  • Correctly processes specimens collected in clinic for lab testing; resolves any lab related errors. 
  • Follows Vaccines for Children program protocols; ensures proper ordering/stock, handling and recording of vaccine admissions; assists with vaccine administration for children and adults.
  • Returns phone messages as assigned; communicates with provider(s) as needed.  All communication must be documented appropriately within the EMR
  • Participates in a multidisciplinary care team and identifies problems and provides feedback to team members regarding a solution.  
  • Assists with the workflow of the clinic as needed, including patient registration and the completion of required paperwork.
  • Demonstrates compliance with all policies, procedures and state/federal regulations; participates in the development of agency policies and programs to assure FQHC, NCQA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Ensures continuous flow of communication with the leadership team to enhance the quality of healthcare service to our patients.
  • Takes part in performance improvement activities such as medical staff team huddles, quality assurance audits, continuing education and Patient Centered Medical Home processes.
  • Participates in the integration of services including primary care, behavior health, dental services and supportive housing; serves as a resource to other providers and staff. 
  • Maintains a commitment to the achievement of quality health care services through good communication and by maintaining patient rights, safety, privacy and confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program required.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary and Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification required; Candidates who do not have the certification, may still apply but must acquire a certification within 30 days of employment.
  •  Must possess knowledge of the healthcare field including medical terminology and the use of electronic health records.
  •  Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center preferred.
  •  Familiarity with medical laboratory and Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR).
  •  Knowledge of PCMH preferred.
  •  Must be able to work cooperatively with staff and others involved in the delivery of service to patients.
  • Must maintain confidentiality relating to treatment in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
