SCOPE OF ROLE
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing commercial products and their production processes. Works closely with product development team to turn concepts into manufacturable items based on production capabilities. This position is responsible for engineering work involving complex design concepts and calculations related to pressure vessel and corresponding structural components. Develops 3D solid models, detailed drawings, and technical specifications for the manufacture of Cargo Tank Motor vehicles serving the bulk liquid transportation industry. Writes process and work instructions, designs fixtures and constraints for work centers. Coordinating with the customer service department to identify potential product defects or customer suggestions. For an individual to perform this job successfully, one must be able to perform the duties described above satisfactorily, as well as work closely with Team Members as needed to accomplish the task at hand. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Applies engineering method to develop products while ensuring quality, regulatory, andprofitability requirements
  • Assists and troubleshoots problems and/or questions with production staff on fabrication ofcomponents and assemblies
  • Calculates material usage for all components and parts for assemblies
  • Collaborates with designers on improvements to product lines
  • Completes updates or changes to released engineering documents via Engineering ChangeNotice (ECN) procedure
  • Computes mathematical formulas to develop and design detailed specifications for componentsand/or machinery, using computer-assisted equipment
  • Confers with senior engineer to review schematics and answers questions pertaining toinstallation of systems
  • Coordinates and consults with other workers to design, layout, and detail components andsystems and to resolve any design issue or other problems
  • Creates and enters part numbers, bills of material, and shop floor routings into ERP system
  • Creates models, prints, schematics, and bills of material for production aid
  • Designs, calculates, and drafts pressure vessels and corresponding structural components usingSTE’s CAD and FEA software
  • Develops 3D models and detailed drawings for components, assemblies, and hardware based onspecifications from sales
  • Develops drawings/specifications to all applicable regulations and standards
  • Evaluates change requests with respect to effects on cost, weight, ease of manufacturing, quality,and customer impact
  • Maintains flexibility to shift tasks per STE’s needs
  • Lays out, draws, and details schematics, parts, and assemblies with all necessary views andcontent to depict functional relationships of components, assemblies, systems, and installations
  • Modifies and revises designs to correct operating deficiencies or to reduce production problems
  • Notifies supervisor of any quality concerns or delays
  • Positions instructions and comments onto drawings, reference manuals, and technicalpublications to describe the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION: MECHANICAL ENGINEER
  • Reviews and analyzes specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed
  • Reviews drawings, bills of material, and routings to verify accuracy of information
  • Shifts tasks based on manufacturing needs
  • Suggests and/or collaborates on design improvements or alternative methods leading to efficient and accurate ways to accomplish tasks
  • Verifies accuracy of engineering information for manufacturing
  • Works within deadlines to ensure timely deliveries
  • Uses market research to get ideas for products that customers will want
  • Helps to oversee the design and manufacture and plans how to market and promote the product to the public
  • Defines product marketing communication objectives
  • Compares the company’s products to competitor’s products in order to assess competition in the market
  • Provides management with analyses and reports and responding to questions and requests from management
  • Specifies and oversees the research needed to determine the needs and desires of customers
  • Evaluates quality control processes and makes recommendations for improvements in quality control
  • Problem solves and communicates effectively with work team
  • Contributes ideas for continuous improvement of workflow and processes
  • Follows all safety guidelines and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
Level 1
  • Associate’s degree in mechanical design or related field
  • Highly proficient with Autodesk products (AutoCAD Mechanical, Inventor, and Vault)
  • Design experience with sheet metal, weldments, and large assemblies
  • Experience with ERP systems

Level 2
  • Meets Level One
  • 2-3 years design experience with trailer/vehicle systems
  • Regulatory and Standards knowledge (49CFR§178 & 571, FDA, ASME BPVC_VIII-1, 3-A, ASTM)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Performs and understands calculations used in the engineering design process.

Level 3
  • Meet Level Two
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Design or related field
  • 4+ years design experience with trailer/vehicle systems
  • Develops design validations with compliance to all applicable regulations and standards
  • Develops Calculations and processes that ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards
  • Acts as a Design certifying Engineef

Level 4
  • Meet Level Three
  • Holds a Professional Engineer license valid in WI
  • Actively interprets regulatory requirements
  • Contributes to industry standards groups such as TTMA and NTTC
  • Maintains registration with Transport Canada for Design and manufacture of B620
