Job Title: Truancy Officer

Job Summary: South Cook Intermediate Service center is seeking a Truancy Officer for the 2024-2025 school year. This individual is responsible for monitoring student attendance, identifying patterns of absenteeism, and implementing interventions to support students in overcoming barriers to attendance for the 66 school districts in South Cook County. The ideal candidate works closely with students, parents, school staff, and community resources to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically by attending school regularly.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor Attendance: Regularly review attendance records and identify students with patterns of absenteeism or tardiness.
  • Investigate Causes: Conduct interviews with students and parents to identify the underlying causes of truancy, which may include health issues, family problems, transportation challenges, or disengagement with school.
  • Develop Intervention Plans: Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and other stakeholders to develop individualized intervention plans for students with attendance issues.
  • Provide Support: Offer support and resources to students and families to address barriers to attendance, such as connecting them with social services, counseling, or transportation assistance.
  • Implement Truancy Prevention Programs: Organize and facilitate truancy prevention programs, workshops, and activities to educate students and parents about the importance of regular school attendance.
  • Conduct Home Visits: Conduct home visits as needed to engage with families, assess home environments, and provide support in addressing attendance issues.
  • Document and Report: Maintain accurate records of attendance interventions, student progress, and communication with students and parents. Prepare reports on truancy rates and trends for school administrators and district officials.
  • Collaborate with Community Partners: Work collaboratively with community organizations, law enforcement agencies, and social service providers to coordinate support services for students and families.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (preferred).
  • Experience working with children, families, and communities in an educational or social services setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with tact and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to truancy and compulsory education.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and data management systems for tracking attendance and interventions.
