POSITION SUMMARY:

Under broad policy guidelines, the Pharmacy Director is responsible for the total operation of the pharmacy service.   The director must provide departmental planning and formulate policies and procedures for the pharmacy service.  The director or co-directors may assist in the teaching of students, nurses and house staff members where applicable.  The director devotes a portion of his/her time to the administrative and management activities of the pharmacy. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his or her assigned department/unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of the patient as related to age, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements, and to provide the care needed as described in policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Has the knowledge of and the ability to maintain established hospital and department policies and procedures, objectives, continuous quality control, oversight of operations, customer relations, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for pharmacy service and operations, in accordance with established policies and procedures of the hospital. Is responsible for all medication and IV solution distribution, security, and storage in the hospital. 
  • Assumes overall supervision of the pharmacy staff, including all hospital pharmacy related areas, during hours of operations.  Will also assign/schedule pharmacist responsible for on-call duties.
  • Responsible for coordinating all pharmacy activities with other ancillary medical/ technical/ financial departments.  Includes drug distribution, clinical, and billing issues.
  • Includes responsibilities of hospital pharmacist when working in roles or duties as staff pharmacist, including operational and patient care functions.  All pharmacy employees (pharmacists, interns, and technicians) are under the supervision of the pharmacy director or co-directors. All pharmacy technicians are under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.  Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. 
  • Attends and participates on hospital committees such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Infection Control, and other similar relevant committees. Will attend various medical committees as needed for discussion and approval of medication orders and protocols.
  • The Pharmacy Director(s) will prepare and be responsible for the inspections by the Joint Commission, California Department of Public Health and other regulatory agencies as relates to the Pharmacy operation and medication management.
  • Must have knowledge of medications in performing the functions of a hospital pharmacist.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, nurses, patients, and other professional personnel.  Ability to communicate both administratively and professionally and to exercise sound judgment using initiative consistent with a high level of expertise.
  • Must be capable of handling a heavy volume of work over an extended period of time.  Must also be capable of handling busy and stressful situations as related to the Pharmacy operation.
  • Must maintain accuracy in verifying medication orders and checking medications dispensed.
  • Must have a basic knowledge of medications in performing the functions of a hospital pharmacist.
  • Must exercise responsible judgment in decision making involving matters of a confidential nature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

 LEADERSHIP:
  •  Management sets the standard for excellence in performance.  In order to do so, you must be at the work site during hours of operation.  Salaried/Exempt management is responsible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  On occasions, you will be called upon to fill in for other managers or for staff who are absent from work.  In those cases there will be NO additional compensation for hours worked beyond what may be a typical work period. 
  • You are expected to behave ethically and morally at all times.
 TIMEKEEPING:
  • Management is directly responsible for overseeing the attendance and timekeeping of their staff.  This responsibility cannot be delegated.
 EVALUATING PERFORMANCE:
  • Evaluate the performance of your staff on an on-going basis.  This is not simply an annual event.
  • Employees should be informed immediately if they are “under -performing” at any time.
 COACHING:
  • Celebrate, recognize and reward individual and team success that model our organizational values. 
  • Provide regular learning opportunities to develop individual talents, and increase team effectiveness.  
  • Invest time and collect and provide balanced and meaningful feedback on performance; encourage personal and professional growth.  
  • Employees who are behaving inappropriately at work or are under performing in the technical aspects of their jobs should be coached immediately and told what they need to do to get back to standard and remain employed. 
 FINANCE:
  • One of the most important management tasks is the creation and adherence to an annual budget.  Your performance in this regard is a large part of your overall responsibility and critical to your longevity with the Medical Center.  You are reminded that you are responsible for public funds.  They must be managed wisely and prudently at all times.  
  • Mismanagement of public funds carries with it the harshest of penalties, including termination.  A pattern of over spending your operating budget is one example of mismanagement.  Our Medical Center is challenged with operating on a very thin margin, so it is imperative that both income and spending are managed exceptionally well.  Nothing less can be tolerated by our Board of Directors or our public.

  • Management is expected to represent all of the organizational values to their staff and customers therefore all essential job functions/responsibilities must be performed at a higher standard.
