WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT MECHANIC III DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:    This position involves responsibility for performing skilled operation, maintenance and repair activities related to a municipal wastewater treatment plant and pump stations/CSOs.  An incumbent also performs building maintenance and repair to WWTP, pump stations and other equipment.  The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Senior WWTP Operator, WWTP Operator, Assistant WWTP Operator or an employee of higher rank with some freedom allowed for exercising independent judgment in carrying out the work.  Supervises WWTP Mechanic II and WWTP Laborers.  Does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK:     (Illustrative only)
  • Operate and maintain a sludge dewatering belt filter press, gravity belt thickener, digester and related equipment and controls.
  • Operate and maintain chemical addition equipment.
  • Operate and maintain a collection system, pump stations, and/or combined sewer overflow facilities.
  • Performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair to machinery and equipment related to pump station including pumps, motors, valves, filters, plumbing and piping systems, mechanical screens, generators and pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
  • Installs and/or replaces valves, pumps and other equipment related to waste water treatment plant and pump station.
  • Conducts daily inspections of buildings, machinery and equipment.  Reports any deficiencies to the Senior WWTP Operator, Plant Operator or other employee of higher rank.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to pump station machinery and equipment, including cleaning and lubricating equipment.
  • Performs daily monitoring of operating parameters and pumping stations including monitoring pump pressures and voltage and amperage readings.
  • Maintains records and logs related to maintenance and repair.
  • Uses a variety of tools for maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment including wrenches and torches.
  • Performs building maintenance and repair including carpentry, plumbing and low voltage electrical repairs.
  • Meets with WWTP Senior Operator, WWTP Operator, and/or Assistant WWTP Operator to discuss and report on maintenance and repair of the WWTP and pump stations/CSOs.
  • May perform other WWTP, pump stations or CSOs related activities on occasion.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:       
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of installation, operation, maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment used in waste water treatment plant and pumping stations/CSOs; Good knowledge of principles and practices of building maintenance and repair
  • Good knowledge of tools used in the maintenance and repair of waste water treatment plant, pumping station, wastewater collection systems and buildings
  • Ability to use a variety of tools utilized in maintenance and repair of WWTP, pumping station/CSO systems and buildings
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;  Ability to keep records and logs
  • Ability to install and maintain pumping station machinery equipment and perform building maintenance and repair

  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.  
  • Must be willing and able to report to work for emergencies within a reasonable time frame.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 
  • two (2) years experience performing skilled plumbing or mechanical installation, maintenance and repair work; OR
  • Five (5) years on-the-job experience working at a WWTP and/or wastewater collection system.
PROMOTIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FROM NON-COMPETITIVE CLASS:
  • 24 months permanent status as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic II
  • Five (5) years’ experience performing skilled plumbing or mechanical installation, maintenance, and repair work at the Kingston Wastewater Treatment Plant.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: 
  • May be required to obtain a CDL license within 6 months of appointment.
  • Ability to pass a D.O.T. pre-employment drug screen and physical
  • Must be 18 years or older with a clean Driver License
