Atlanta, United States Atlanta Legal Aid Society Full time $58,000
Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney for the Health Law Partnership (“HeLP”). HeLP is a
community-based, medical-legal partnership between Georgia State University College of Law, Children’s Healthcare of
Atlanta, and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. The project aims to improve the health and well-being of low-income
children, who are patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, by coordinating services to address legal, social and
economic conditions threatening their health.

Legal Aid’s component of HeLP provides legal services to low-income families of children in Children’s Healthcare of
Atlanta’s three hospitals: Scottish Rite, Arthur M. Blank, and Hughes Spalding; children seen in Children’s Clinics and
physician offices that are part of the Clinically Integrated Network; and children at the Center for Advanced
Pediatrics. Legal Aid attorneys are located at each of the three hospitals, and at the Center for Advanced Pediatrics.

Responsibilities:
  • The Staff Attorney performs client intake, and provides referrals, advice, brief service, or representation in a variety of civil legal matters affecting children’s health including public benefits and health insurance, poor housing conditions, disability rights, access to educational services, and family law.
  • The Staff Attorney also trains and coordinates with doctors, social workers, and other health care professionals; works with students in law, medicine, social work, public health, and bioethics; and participates in task forces and committees of service providers.

Qualifications:
  • A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next exam, and a minimum of 2 years of relevant legal experience are required.
  • Applicants must possess excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills; a strong work ethic; the ability to communicate effectively with children, families, doctors, social workers and hospital staff.
  • The ability to work alone and as a team member; eagerness to learn and openness to evaluation; and an appreciation of diversity.
  • A demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with
areas of poverty law, previous work with low-income persons and/or persons with serious health issues, and knowledge of health law, poverty law and children’s legal issues are preferred.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English and willingness to improve language skills is highly valued.
  • The selected candidate will need to comply with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s health screening and immunization requirements.

Salary and Benefits: The salary for two years of legal experience is $58,000. (The salary offered may increase or decrease depending on the actual, relevant experience of the selected candidate.) Salaries currently increase annually based on a salary scale. We recently engaged a compensation consultant to review our current structure and make recommendations for improvement. The program provides generous fringe benefits including 18 paid holidays (in 2024), 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health (including optional dental and vision coverage), life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period. This position may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the U.S. Department of Education.

Application Requirements: Submit a letter of interest; resume; writing sample (advice letter, legal memorandum or brief); official law school transcript (a copy is acceptable pending your order of an official transcript); and the names, phone numbers and email addresses of three professional references (preferably individuals who have supervised or managed your work) as one (1) PDF using our online application system at atlantalegalaid.org/jobs. Only applications with all of the requested documents will be considered for an interview.

Your application will be acknowledged. No phone calls please. For assistance with technical difficulties in submitting
