Bilingual Advocacy Supervisor

Wayne, United States Passaic County CASA Full time $40,000 - $45,000
Our Advocacy Supervisors are from diverse backgrounds and are the key professional support for our volunteer advocates. Our staff has worked as law guardians, prosecutors, child welfare workers, as teachers, in law firms, in customer service, in healthcare, in volunteer management, and in a wide range of social service positions. All advocacy supervisors bring a deep passion for the children we serve and the volunteers that support them.

Despite this diversity, Advocacy Supervisors share common characteristics: they are highly intelligent and professional, perceptive about human behavior, hungry for knowledge, comfortable in the courtroom and a non-profit work environment, and tireless and strategic in their advocacy efforts. Their time is spent interacting with our volunteers and with professionals in the child welfare community, editing and revising reports to the court, and of course, dealing with an array of administrative tasks in a professional and confidential manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (master’s or JD degree preferred).
  • At least two years of professional experience working directly with child welfare and/or family court, preferably in New Jersey.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, writing skills, and attention to detail.
  • A background in volunteerism.
  • This is a full time, exempt, 40+ hours per week position with some night and weekend hours required. Flexibility is key to successful employment at CASA which leads to a healthy work-life balance.
  • Fluency in Spanish would be a plus, although not required.
CASA ADVOCACY SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure that children assigned to CASAs receive the advocacy they need.
  • Ensure that the children’s best interests are presented to the Family Court.
  • Ensure that the needs of the volunteers are met and that the volunteers are satisfied.
  • Ensure that the policies and procedures of CASA are followed by all volunteers.
  • Promote the mission of CASA in the community.
Specifically, Advocacy Supervisors will:
  • Maintain substantial knowledge regarding the CASA model, policies and procedures, family law, special education law, and DCPP.
  • Maintain an ongoing caseload involving a total of approximately 30 CASA volunteers and provide supervision and support to those CASAs.
  • Establish at least monthly contact with all CASAs and maintain detailed written records concerning all contacts with CASAs and other parties involved in a child’s case.
  • Conduct initial and annual evaluations with each volunteer and provide a written record of the evaluation in the volunteer file.
  • Conduct a monthly small group meeting for volunteers.
  • Attend and support CASAs at relevant meetings, court hearings, and Individualized Education Program meetings.
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of volunteer training and continuing education curriculum.
  • Review and approve the accuracy and appropriateness of court reports and related communications to the Court and other agencies.
  • Have the ability to communicate with, supervise, and empower volunteers to be effective in their roles.
  • Have the ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities and successfully manage conflict.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of issues and dynamics within families in crisis related to child abuse and neglect such as mental illness, domestic violence, substance abuse, and poverty.
  • Assist in the recruitment, screening, and training of new volunteers.
  • Assist in assigning new cases and matching appropriate volunteers, in consultation with the Program staff.
  • Help develop initial advocacy plans with volunteers and ongoing strategies for advocacy.
  • Provide regular assistance and consultation to volunteers.
  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of in-service trainings for active volunteers.
  • Attend conferences/seminars/meetings as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Participate as a contributing member of the team bringing new ideas to the organization in order to support the achievement of PC CASA’s goals and mission.
