Summary:  Responsible for the design, development, processing, and testing of materials used to create medical device products and hydrogels. The Materials Engineer is also responsible for managing vendor relationships, negotiating contracts, assessing supply needs, and coordinating delivery schedules. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review plans for new products and make recommendations for the selection of materials based on design objectives, such as process ability, strength, weight, cost, and storage space at the facilities.
  • Evaluate suppliers based on delivery speed for their products and services, price, and quality.
  • Negotiate short- and long-term contracts for the organization and work out agreements with suppliers for product delivery.
  • Analyze market data and other information used to determine reasonable pricing.
  • Prepare budgets and proposals, write reports, analyze labor costs, and ensure all projects remain within budget.
  • Conduct tests on raw materials and finished products to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications.
  • Analyze product issues and failure data to better understand the causes of problems and come up with better and more innovative solutions.
  • Consult with corporate executives and other engineering professionals as necessary to plan and assess new projects and their objectives.
  • Support R&D and Engineering with process & test development, prototyping, design verification, SPC process optimization & validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), and failure modes effect analysis (FMEA).
  • Modify the properties of substances and design and prepare formulations.
  • Create and improve processes and products and develop and set up new test methods.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  
  • Must be able to perform each duty outlined above and possess the education, skills, and abilities described in this job description.
Education and/or Experience:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering or a related engineering field with three years of experience in materials engineering or a combination of education and experience.
Language Skills:  
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret AMC policies, procedures, and regulations and must be able to write reports and effectively present information to company management as required.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
  • Identify problems and review relevant information to evaluate options and develop solutions.
  • Understand and follow Design of Experiment (DOE) processes.
Physical Requirements: 
  • Constant use of hands and arms.
  • Good vision, depth perception, hearing, and speech.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25+ pounds (4 ft high, 10 times per day).
Environmental Conditions:  
  • Majority of time is spent indoors with few to any changes in temperature, and this position works in close proximity to heavy and noisy machinery and requires use of chemicals with strong odors.
Other Skills/Abilities:  
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong knowledge of fundamental chemistry and polymeric materials.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with product design.
