The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), the leading trade organization representing the interests of music publishers in the United States, is looking to fill a paralegal/legal assistant position in its legal department based in Washington, D.C. The paralegal/legal assistant will report to NMPA's General Counsel. This employee will work with NMPA’s legal and business affairs staff, as well as outside counsel, on all matters relating to NMPA's litigation, business affairs and policy work. Experience as a legal assistant/paralegal is important.   Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Draft legal documents and letters, including cease and desist notices, legal take down notices, and subpoena responses.
  • Research and analyze statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources and maintain a database of relevant precedents. Where requested provide written analysis to attorneys.
  • Research and analyze music use on digital platforms, services, applications; preparing memos, reports and spreadsheets of research.
  • Tracks NMPA legal matters and manages status reports for attorneys.
  • Tracks and reviews outside counsel invoices and works with finance to submit for processing.
  • Assist in creation of PowerPoints and slides for legal panels, presentations and board meetings.

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree; 2-3 years of work experience. Music industry experience a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
