San Francisco, United States Atlassian Full time
Senior Principal Machine Learning Engineer, Central AI

Engineering | Seattle, United States | Remote, Remote | San Francisco, United States | Austin, United States | Full-Time

Atlassians have flexibility in where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, as part of being a distributed-first company.

Atlassian is seeking a Senior Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join our Central AI organization. The Central AI organization develops the foundational infrastructure, data pipelines, frameworks, models, Gen AI, and other capabilities to expedite AI feature development throughout the entire company.

Your future team

Central AI’s mission is to expedite AI innovation across all Atlassian products and platforms, ensuring a unified AI user experience and establishing a robust AI infrastructure for Atlassian's future.

Central AI is tasked with constructing the underlying infrastructure and capacities, which are crucial for the seamless integration and optimal functionality of AI across various products.

What you’ll do

As a Senior Principal Machine Learning Engineer, your role will be instrumental in steering the development and deployment of advanced machine learning algorithms and system architecture. You will be tasked with training complex models and working in close collaboration with product, backend/front end engineering, and analytics teams to seamlessly integrate AI functionalities into every Atlassian product and service. Your day-to-day responsibilities will span a wide range of tasks, including designing system and model architectures, conducting meticulous experimentation and model evaluations, and mentoring budding ML engineers.

Your backgroundOn the first day, we'll expect you to have
  1. Master’s degree or equivalent practical experience
  2. 10+ years of related industry experience in AI/machine learning domain
  3. Expertise in Python or Java with the ability to write performant production-quality code, familiarity with SQL, knowledge of Spark and cloud data environments (e.g. AWS, Databricks)
  4. Experience building and scaling machine learning models in business applications using large amounts of data
  5. Ability to communicate and explain data science concepts to diverse audiences
  6. Focus on business practicality and the 80/20 rule; high bar for output quality, but recognize the business benefit of 'having something now' vs 'perfection sometime in the future'
  7. Agile development mindset, appreciating the benefit of constant iteration and improvement
It's great, but not required, if you have
  1. Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
  2. Experience working in a consumer or B2C space for a SaaS product provider, or the enterprise/B2B space
  3. Experience in developing deep learning-based models and working on LLM-related applications
  4. Excelling in solving ambiguous and complex problems
