Job Summary

The Flyover is a family of morning email newsletters that covers a wide range of news for nearly 1 million Americans.

We produce eight unique newsletters, and we're looking for a sharp writer & editor who will own the editorial process for several of our editions.

This is an in-office role in Fort Collins, CO that comes with a salary of $75k-90$, health insurance 100% covered by the employer, a retirement match, and flexible time off.

Responsibilities

Editorial Development

You’ll help our writers choose stories and sources as they handle the bulk of the writing for their assigned edition, and you’ll copyedit along the way. You’ll also be available to step in and write complete editions yourself when needed.

Copywriting

Although our writers handle the bulk of the composition, our Editors step in to draft pieces of our content on a regular basis.

Quality Control

After the editions have been written and edited, you’ll be the final set of eyes that combs the editions for mistakes and makes corrections. This includes grammar, clarity, fact-checking, layout, links, ads, etc.

After-Hours Edits

When a major story breaks in the evening (after an edition has been completed and scheduled to be sent in the morning), you’ll jump online and add the new story to the edition.

Email Sending

You will “push send” on our emails, using our internal tools and an enterprise-level email sending platform.

Requirements

Exceptional writing and editing skills. This role requires more than a “competent” writer; you’ll need to adopt The Flyover’s tone and write clear, direct prose, and you’ll edit others’ work to the same standard. We need someone with the natural ability to sniff out confusion, cringe, and anything else that lowers our quality level. Finally, you’ll need to do all this at a reasonable clip and keep our processes on schedule.

News judgment. Story selection is a huge part of the role, and you’ll need the ability to sift through the day’s news and decide which stories are most interesting and fit our brand. Additionally, you need the ability to identify the “big idea” in a story and distil it down into a brief paragraph.

Basic technical competence. This role requires a quick & confident PC user. The technical learning curve is shallow, but it requires someone who is generally comfortable with computer usage and is willing to learn new things.

We are a small business, and we need folks with “all-in” attitudes that are flexible, easy to get along with, and willing to jump in to do whatever it takes to get a quality product out the door.

Our Monday editions require our writers and editors to be available on Sundays. Some of the work can be done ahead of time, allowing you to get started later than on other days, but Sunday will still be a workday for you.

We will be expanding to seven days per week eventually, and this may require schedule adjustments and rotating availability on Saturdays.
