Scientific Director, Lurie Family Imaging Center

Boston, United States Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Full time

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has an exceptional opportunity for a proven leader to head the Lurie Family Imaging Center (LFIC), the pre-clinical arm of the Center for Biomedical Imaging in Oncology (CBIO). CBIO is a centralized cancer imaging research enterprise that was established as a paradigm shift for translational cancer research through the integration of pre-clinical, clinical multidisciplinary expertise, and drug/probe development.

LFIC is a state-of-the-art imaging facility that is focused on interdisciplinary in vivo translational studies and experimental cancer therapeutics. LFIC is equipped with optical imaging, 7TMRI, microPET/SPECT/CT, ultrasound, and image-guided irradiation systems. LFIC can accommodate 16,500 experimental animals, including genetically engineered, cell line xenograft, and primary xenograft mouse cancer models.Imaging equipment is co-localized with animal housing behind a bio-barrier permitting serial imaging of experimental subjects. The studies conducted at the LFIC are focused on cancer, with an emphasis on assessment of novel cancer therapeutics, multimodality imaging of cancer, molecular imaging of pharmacodynamic efficacy, development of novel probes, and target validation. To address the CBIO translational science mission, the DFCI has a dedicated research cyclotron adjacent to the LFIC facility which further enhances the capabilities and impact of CBIO, LFIC, and the radiochemistry program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in life changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care. We are united in our mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS and related diseases. We strive to create an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment where we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all backgrounds, and design programs to promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations. We conduct groundbreaking research that advances treatment, we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers, and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

The successful candidate will serve as the Pre-Clinical Imaging Scientific Director and work closely with Institute Leadership to shape the vision and strategic direction of CBIO/LFIC. The Director will oversee the daily operations of LFIC and will manage a staff of dedicated physicists, scientists, animal/imaging technologists, and administrative personnel with integrity and clear leadership. The Director will recruit and supervise future staff, have fiscal responsibility for the LFIC including the management of capital/operational budgets, revenue stream, government/industry grants and contracts. The Director will work closely with other Centers and Departments at Dana-Farber that are engaged in research on small animal modeling in cancer and in experimental therapeutics.

The successful candidate must have extensive experience with imaging and experimental therapeutics, either in an academic or industry setting, and will work with collaborating scientists to design imaging and experimental therapeutics studies, and will be responsible for the execution, analysis and generation of reports for studies. The successful candidate must also have proven leadership abilities overseeing a number of direct reports and must be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary manner to achieve goals. A strong knowledge base in the areas of imaging, cancer biology, and drug discovery are required.

The Scientific Director is the thought leader of the core and is responsible for strategic decision-making regarding project engagement. The Scientific Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining a financially sustainable research Center and charting the Center’s future direction. This is achieved by creating a formal network of academic and industry researchers at Dana-Farber and beyond and acting as a spokesperson for the Institute when establishing new business relationships. The Scientific Director’s specific responsibilities in this area include, but are not limited to, negotiating service contracts and collaboration agreements, drafting statements of work with specific scientific proposals, consulting with researchers and sponsors on the development of projects, and overseeing the Center’s execution of these contracts and agreements. Additionally, they are responsible for establishing and updating Center’s pricing in collaboration with DFCI research administration.

The Scientific Director serves as a full member on Dana-Farber’s radiation safety committee. In this capacity, they provide expert feedback to the committee regarding internal permit applications and other DFCI activities involving the manipulation of radioisotopes.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute supports a robust Scientist career track with multiple opportunities for advancement, leadership, and recognition. The successful candidate will be appointed to a level within the Scientist career track commensurate with his or her accomplishments and abilities. Promotion on this track will be based on achievement of goals and demonstrated leadership ability in LFIC.
