The Motion Picture Association, Inc. ("MPA") works globally to protect its members' films, television shows, and live events from piracy. The MPA focuses on combating online piracy, including through relationships with intermediaries that pirates often rely on for their operations. These intermediaries include video players, hosting providers, payment processors, advertising networks, and more.
Job Summary
The MPA is seeking a Counsel to support the Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Content Protection and Legal Affairs (Intermediary Programs) in managing the global intermediary outreach program for the MPA and its related entity, the Alliance for Creativity in Entertainment (ACE). This position will play a key role in managing vendor relationships, supporting outreach and voluntary initiatives, and assisting with various other aspects of the intermediary program. The ideal candidate will be a motivated lawyer with 2-3 years of legal experience in the entertainment industry, preferably in content protection, and skilled in relationship building. They must be detail-oriented, nimble, and capable of managing multiple vendors to drive results and share those results efficiently and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing vendor relationships for the global intermediary program, including working closely with outside vendors, partners, and other stakeholders to ensure the efficient and cost-effective delivery of program objectives. This includes auditing and synthesizing vendor data for use by the MPA/ACE and its members, and working with the MPA Research team to ensure the data is methodologically sound, accurate, and meets the requirements of relevant stakeholders.
- Support outreach to intermediaries, including drafting and reviewing correspondence, managing communications, and tracking engagement with intermediaries.
- Assist with coordinating voluntary initiatives with intermediaries to help prevent their services from being abused by piracy operators.
- Support legal research and drafting related to the intermediary program, including preparing reports, drafting reasoned and data-driven requests to be sought via voluntary agreements, and gathering information on specific intermediaries and their roles.
- Provide support for broader global content protection strategies, including conducting factual and technical research, monitoring relevant developments, and assisting in the preparation of reports and other materials.
- Collaborate with internal teams at the MPA/ACE and their members to facilitate the intermediary program and address legal or operational challenges.
- Manage assigned tasks and projects under the guidance of the Senior Vice President, ensuring they are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Valid bar license, preferably in California or Washington, D.C.
- 2-3 years of experience practicing law, ideally in a law firm or in-house legal department where the client focus was on the entertainment industry. Experience with content protection, copyright law, DMCA/ROIs, and civil litigation is a plus.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, concise correspondence and legal/strategic documents.
- High level of professionalism, work ethic, and integrity, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, both internally and externally.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive, problem-solving attitude.
- Familiarity with digital content platforms, social media, search engines, payment processors, and other digital intermediaries is preferred.
- Understanding of statistics and research methodologies with the ability to evaluate and create data-driven strategic reports.
- Understanding of digital asset management related to copyright protection and enforcement (e.g., YouTube, Meta, TikTok, Daily Motion, etc.).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Willingness to travel up to 15% domestically and internationally.
