GIS Manager

Hybrid Role in Atlanta, GA or Naperville, IL

JOB SUMMARY

This role leads a team responsible for supporting Geographic Information System (GIS) functions for a regulated utility provider's distribution operations. It involves managing the full software development lifecycle of GIS technologies, including planning, roadmap development, project delivery, production support, and maintenance. The position partners closely with field operations executives and senior leadership to align GIS investments with strategic goals, enhance employee and customer experiences, and ensure operational excellence through continuous improvements.


This leader oversees a team of nine IT professionals (including contractors), manages a technology budget of $1M–$5M annually, and handles a project portfolio valued at $10M–$20M. The role focuses on simplifying GIS solutions, driving technology consolidation, and enabling strategic business outcomes through innovation and robust technology solutions.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Ensure GIS technology reliability and minimize operational disruptions.

- Continuously improve performance through data-driven metrics.

- Develop and drive a comprehensive GIS technology roadmap aligned with business objectives.

- Partner with business stakeholders to integrate GIS solutions that deliver measurable value.

- Promote design simplicity to create scalable, maintainable, and high-availability systems.

- Lead the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), from planning to production support.

- Collaborate with cross-functional technology leaders to ensure scalability and alignment.

- Manage relationships with key product and service vendors, ensuring accountability for quality and results.

- Drive innovation through emerging technologies such as AI and automation.

- Retire legacy systems to adopt modern, efficient technologies.

- Maintain budgetary oversight and financial performance accountability.

- Build and retain a diverse, high-performing team of technology professionals.

- Foster a culture of accountability, communication, and engagement.


QUALIFICATIONS


Education

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.

- Advanced degree preferred.


Experience & Knowledge

- 10+ years of IT experience, with 5+ years managing cross-functional teams.

- Strong understanding of GIS, particularly ESRI products, and their applications in utilities.

- Extensive knowledge of integration principles, SDLC methodologies (Waterfall/Agile), and ITIL practices.

- Experience developing strategic technology roadmaps and achieving operational objectives.

- Demonstrated success leading in fast-paced, real-time environments.
