Reports To: Quality Control Manager


Purpose: The job of the "Chemist" is simply described as an individual contributor who performs testing of samples of various types using various techniques or equipment in the QC laboratory. The job itself may be further modified with respect to the department, group, etc., as exemplified in the "Department" on an individual assigned basis to a sometimes-specific testing group. The role may be further modified based upon individual education, training, experience, or a combination of all three.


Scope: The scope (content and statements) of this job description is designed to describe the general nature and level of work as well as provide a basic understanding of the role, responsibilities, and expectations of the person assigned to perform the job. The intent is to give a general scope of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position and provide basic performance expectations. Consideration of education, relevant training, and experience or a combination of all three may also result in further modification of the role.


Duties and Responsibilities: The general duties and responsibilities of the "Chemist" include but are not limited to the following:


  1. Conduct routine testing or other analysis in a specific group or department setting.
  2. Conduct advanced testing and/or critical testing, as required.
  3. Operate specialized equipment or conduct specialized skill testing.
  4. Working knowledge of raw materials testing and release.
  5. Working knowledge of instruments such as Karl Fisher, HPLC, GC, Particle size, ICP.
  6. Lead investigation activities.
  7. Ensure compliance to all data integrity and cGMP practices, procedures, and expectations.
  8. Ensure compliance with all good documentation practices.
  9. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of the Department or Section Head.

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree (BS or BA), physical sciences preferred.
  2. Proficiently speak English as a first or second language.
  3. Proficiently communicate and understand (read and write) scientific work in English.
  4. Have excellent organization, learning, and teaching skills required to work in teams.
  5. Ability to understand and analyze complex data sets.
  6. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and other scientific-based software.
  7. Experience in Inhalation products (MDI) is a plus.

Working conditions: This role works in a cGMP laboratory or manufacturing environment, where personal protective equipment is required, which may include uniforms, lab coats, safety glasses, respiratory protective equipment, hearing protection, etc. Work with or around solvents, powders, or other materials commonly found in a pharmaceutical laboratory or manufacturing facility is required.


The role may be assigned on a work-shift basis, where required (Day, Evening, Night). Weekend or Holiday work may be requested or required.


Physical requirements:

  1. Work standing or walking unassisted for 75% or greater of an 8-hour period. Unassisted lifting up to 10 kg may be required.
  2. Able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times when required.
  3. Sitting at a desk and/or working at a computer or other "screen" 75% or greater of an 8-hour period.

Professional and Behavioral Competencies:

  1. Must be willing to work in a pharmaceutical packaging setting.
  2. Must be willing and able to work any assigned shift ranging from first or second shift. Work schedule may be Monday to Friday.
  3. Must be willing to work some weekends based on business needs as required by management.
  4. No remote work available.
  5. No employment sponsorship or work visas.
