Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties

Some of the responsibilities of a Deputy Director may include the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement the division and program goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
  2. Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  3. Prepare and administer assigned division budget.
  4. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the work of the assigned division and make the procedural changes necessary to keep the division in compliance.
  5. Make presentations to City Council, boards, commissions, and committees as may be required.
  6. Coordinate engineering activities with other City departments, divisions and sections, and with outside agencies.
  7. Coordinate technical, administrative, and public relations activities of an assigned division with other City divisions, and with outside agencies.
  8. Serve as Acting Director or City Engineer in the absence of the Director.

In addition, the Capital Projects Engineering Division Deputy Director will:

  1. Supervise the development of plans and estimates for construction and major repair of public works systems.
  2. Confer with supervisors and assistants regarding project priorities and programs.
  3. Supervise the construction of capital programs, including inspection, contract administration and claims avoidance.
  4. Participate in the preparation of the capital improvement program and budget.
  5. Review and sign engineering drawings, contract documents, work orders, and purchase orders.
  6. Supervise and participate in the preparation of special engineering and environmental studies and reports.
