Reporting to the Senior Director, Government & Global Affairs, the Director, Science and Practice Programs manages the Association’s activities related to science, research, and the practice of laboratory medicine. The Director will contribute to the Science, Policy & Global Affairs Department’s US advocacy and global programs through an understanding of how science and policy are intertwined, and how one affects the other. S/he will work closely with Association members to support and collaborate in scientific projects including on-site studies, research, and manuscript development and publication.

The Director will serve as the staff liaison to the Science & Practice Core Committee (SPCC)—comprised of representatives from each of the Association’s scientific divisions—and to the Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine Subcommittee of the SPCC, and other SPCC subgroups as necessary and relevant. S/he will have direct supervisory responsibilities of employees, including the Divisions Manager and other key staff to integrate the Association’s science-related programs into a cohesive portfolio.

S/he will collaborate with staff and members across the organization, particularly with the ADLM Academy. S/he will also work with members of the Education team on the ideation and development of scientific programming. S/he will also work closely with the Marketing and Communications team to develop promotional content for science and practice projects and will coordinate with the Publications team to prepare scientific manuscripts and share content.

Specific areas of responsibility include management and support of specific ADLM-initiated projects and activities, as well as the monitoring of related organizations for opportunities to comment or participate in scientific activities; and management of ADLM’s scientific liaisons to outside organizations.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Manages a diverse portfolio of programs that support the scientific and practice needs of the Association and its members, particularly the ADLM Universal Sample Bank.
  2. Collaborates with members to keep abreast of technical advances and trends in laboratory medicine to better inform Association activities in science and practice.
  3. Supports and serves as staff liaison to the Science & Practice Core Committee (SPCC) and related groups, providing expert staff support and perspective in the accomplishment of the Committee’s charge and the Association’s strategic plan.
  4. With the member oversight of the SPCC, directs the ADLM Divisions program and Divisions Manager to ensure the Association covers the breadth of science in the field.
  5. Collaborates with ADLM Academy staff and members on standard-setting, best practice and scientific guidelines.
  6. Works with ADLM publications staff to prepare scientific manuscripts and share content.
  7. Works with ADLM advocacy staff to develop and implement scientific activities in support of the ADLM advocacy agenda.
  8. Works with ADLM education staff to facilitate development of scientific programming, serving as a conduit of information from the Science and Practice Core Committee to the Education Core Committee.
  9. Works with ADLM Marketing and Communications team to develop promotional content for science and practice projects.
  10. Represents the Association’s science and practice positions to both internal and external audiences with authority and credibility, as well as managing ADLM liaisons to other organizations.
  11. Manages the budget for science and practice related expenses.
  12. Interacts with all ADLM employees to facilitate collaborative, productive working relationships.
  13. Maintains positive working relationship with supervisor and senior leadership.
  14. Manages multiple scientifically oriented programs effectively while adapting to changing needs and priorities as the Association advances its strategic plan.

Qualifications:

  1. PhD in clinical biochemistry or related biomedical research field, with five-eight years of related experience.
  2. Experience in a medical or research laboratory highly desirable; formal scientific training required.
  3. Demonstrated project management and outstanding customer/member relation skills required; association experience preferred.
  4. Proven scientific or technical writing ability; experience in scientific writing for a lay audience preferred.
  5. Demonstrated track record of research and successful grant writing preferred.
  6. Experience in oral presentation of scientific information, with an ability to prepare and present formal talks to both internal and external groups and stakeholders.
  7. Outstanding abstract reasoning skills with an ability to apply those skills in identifying new opportunities for growth and/or process improvement.
  8. Excellent interpersonal communications and public speaking skills.
  9. Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and leading teams, overseeing direct reports to achieve organizational goals effectively.
  10. Ability to interact with individuals at various levels of the organization regarding complex biomedical and policy issues.
