A medical physicist is a health care professional who uses their knowledge of physics to develop and use medical devices, technologies, and radiation treatments . They work with a variety of health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, to ensure the safe and effective use of radiation in medicine.
Medical physicists have a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Research and development
Researching new technologies and treatment options for cancer, heart disease, or mental illness
- Teaching
Teaching and training future medical physicists, residents, and medical students
- Consulting
Consulting with physician colleagues to offer advice and resources to solve problems
- Radiation therapy
Planning and delivering radiation treatments for cancer patients, including checking dose calculations and ensuring radiation safety - Equipment quality assurance
Ensuring that equipment like X-ray machines, CT machines, MRI machines, and PET machines are operating correctly
Medical physicists often work in hospital diagnostic imaging departments, cancer treatment facilities, or hospital-based research establishments.
