Job title: Technical Sign Language Interpreter

Location: Benet Laboratories, Watervliet, NY

Duties:

  • The applicant shall provide technical interpreting services to one hearing-impaired employee.
  • The applicant should provide an accurate and efficient sign language interpretation between sign language users and hearing individuals in technical settings, such as conferences, workshops, training sessions, seminars, and meetings.
  • Demonstrate fluency and proficiency in sign language, including knowledge of specialized technical terminology and concepts in relevant fields such as science, technology, engineering, or other domains.
  • The applicant shall ensure effective communication by interpreting spoken language into sign language and vice versa, conveying information accurately while considering cultural nuances, tone, and intent.
  • The applicant should provide a demonstration of cultural sensitivity and understanding regarding diverse deaf communities, encompassing awareness of various sign language dialects and variations.

Qualifications:

  • The applicant must be familiar with engineering terms.
  • The applicant must be proficient in sign language, including fluency in a recognized sign language such as American Sign Language (ASL) or another country-specific sign language.
  • Strong communication skills, both in sign language and spoken language, to effectively convey information accurately and clearly.
  • Cultural competence and understanding of diverse deaf communities.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure and fast-paced environments, managing multiple assignments and deadlines effectively.
  • Continuous commitment to professional development and staying updated with the latest developments in technology and sign language proficiency.

Hours of Operation:

  • two (2) visits per week, 3 hours per visit
